My name is Susie Cameron and I'm from Sydney, Australia. Attached is a profile on Sydney photographer Dean Sewell and his photograhs on Sydney suburb Redfern, most infamous 'Block'. The 'Block' has a reputation as the most dangerous place in Sydney. A small Aboriginal community live in broken terraces that line a few streets that join-up the 'Block'. It's funny, I've been there a few times and nothing has happened to me. There are a lot of white people like myself that cause trouble around there!
I have called this Blocked and wrote it for my media writing class last year. I would really like to get Blocked published to provoke awareness about Aboriginals in Australia. Blocked reflects not only how Aboriginal people are treated in the media but how society takes this racist viewpoint; this is a very sensitive issue in Australia. This is story of one guy who wants to get these stories out; in a place where the mainstream view is tough!
Hope you enjoy Blocked. You guys seem like you are doing wonderful things. If you are interested I have a disk with Dean's photos of the 'Block' - they are in black and white.
Also, I have used a lot of local references. I have cut them down but if you have any problem understanding anything, let me know. I have used words like 'black' or 'white' not to be racist but to demonstrate how we speak.
