Vienna YouthForce
XVIII International AIDS Conference
18 - 23 July 2010
Who: UNAIDS & The Vienna YouthForce
When: 22 July 2010 15:00 - 16:00 PC2
What: Press Conference "Young people make it happen - UNAIDS report
shows the crucial role of young people in HIV and AIDS prevention
programmes"
Vienna YouthForce Spokespeople:
Kuena Diaho, WYWCA, Lesotho
Yvonne Akoth, WAGGS, the Girl scouts Kenya
Remmy Shawa, Zambia, Special UNAIDS Youth Fellow
Thierry Schaffauser, French Sex Workers Union STRASS, France
UNAIDS representatives:
Dr. Peter Ghys, Chief of Epidemiology and Analysis Division,
UNAIDS
Why: UNAIDS has made empowering young people to protect themselves from
HIV as a
priority area. It calls on countries to implement a comprehensive set of
programmes that put young people's leadership at the centre of national
responses, provide rights-based sexual and reproductive health education
and
services and empower young people to prevent sexual and other
transmission
of HIV infection among their peers. This can be achieved by ensuring
access
to HIV testing and prevention efforts with and for young people in the
context of sexuality education. And by ensuring enabling legal
environments,
education and employment opportunities to reduce vulnerability to HIV.
Young people have shown that they can be change agents in the prevention
revolution.
