Sujet: Re: [ycdogender] WAYS TO ENHANCE WOMEN INTEGRATION INTO GENDER EQUALITY
Envoyé: Nov 20th, 2003 - 10:44:42

  Hi everyone,

It really interests me to be part of this group and i wish to continue making my contributions in this women e-conference.

All over the world, women face a lot of challenges while trying to build communities of learning. This has been so because of gender inequality which is the major problem as a result of the multiple role women play in the family and society.
Gender inequality being the socially constructed and culturally defined differences between men and women is everywhere. This inequality affects women in different aspects of their lives including socially, economically, politically, religiously and this is always a consequence of culture.
Socially, women are not allowed to make contributions where the men are taking decisions in certain communities .Even when they have superior points or opinion,it is immaterial.
This has greatly affected their psyche and women seem to accept this placement in the social strata.
Economically, greater percentage of women are unemployed and even if they are working, they are always low income earners and do not have any savings to help them do what ever they wish. They cannot carrry out any project of their own even when they are willling and knowledgeable to do that as a result of worsening economic policies, increasing poverty, decaying infrastructure and lack of sound health system.
Educationally, they are still behind in most cultures as some cultures do not allow women to come out and speak in the public especially here in Nigeria.
Therefore, the major problems of women include illiteracy, poverty, dependence and inequality.we need to get a place to fight for women in the sun through eradication of all forms of discrimination against women, women empowerment, women participation in political processes and decision making.
Strategies that can encourage gender integration include

1.Education of women so as to expose them to what they should know and do.
2.Education of men so as to accept women as their equal partner in development.
3.Mass enlightenment of the public over some customs which pose as challenges to women especially in areas where women are mostly affected due to culture.
Governments in adopting the Beijing platform for Action (BPA) agreed that "achieving the goal of equal participation of women and men in decision making will provide the balance that is needed to strenghten democracy and promote its proper functioning".For example, the 1999 constitution of Nigeria was discriminatary in language, content and practice.
The regional and national resource allocation machanisms and structures were gender insensitive.Budgeting being an integral partb of decision making can help in achieving gender eqality and equity through natioanl budgets.
UNIFEM points out that the introduction of a gender responsive approach into natioanl resource allocation s part of the process of mianstreaming gender into government policies and programmes.
This process not only strenghtens economic and financial governance ,it also promotes overall governance.
Women can be involved through UN development programme, UN Agencies, Civil Societies, Organizations that encourage programmes on good Governance , Poverty Allevation and sustanable human development.

Women can also be appointed into leadership position in Government as National machinearies, Women Legislators, Leaders in Diffrent Civil Society Groups so as to be part of Macro-Economic Policies, Budgets, Legistors, Developmental Policies and Programmes

In the Issue of Violence against women which is one of the reason why women choose not to be involved, there should be National gender Focus in the Reform of institutions, practices, systems and policies using the frame work of Convention on Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women(CEDAW ).The African center on poeple and Human rights(ACPHR) and networking with other relevant government /organizational agencies nationally and internatioanlly.
Capacity building programmes for women can also be achievd through women involvement with organizations that encourage training ,financing, internship, mentorship etc.
Though this writing might not be the general view of all but i believe that it has conveyed little meaning into what needs to be done or areas to consider when mainstreaming women into gender equality program.
Yours sincerely,
