Sujet: Integrated development media campaigns targeted at young women
Envoyé: Nov 17th, 2003 - 12:48:34

While I think it's good to focus most of our discussions here on young
women as active creators of and participants in ICT4D
projects/activities, it might also be interesting to explore what it
takes to develop a good multimedia development campaign targeted at
young women...

I was responding to an email from a young woman this morning about the
history of development communications and stumbled across a very
interesting evaluation of the Sara Communication Initiative undertaken
by UNICEF and the Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication
Programs (http://www.jhuccp.org/pressroom/2003/04-09.doc). This project
was initially developed in Eastern and Southern Africa, but spread
quickly to Central and Western Africa as well.

The project's objectives were to research, produce and disseminate a
regional communication package (including comic books and animated
video) on the Rights of the Child in order to:

1. Create awareness and advocate for the reduction of existing
disparities in the status and treatment of girls.
2. Support social mobilization processes designed to realize the
potential of female children and to foster their participation in
development.
3. Produce a dynamic role model for girls that will assist in their
acquisition of psychosocial life skills essential for empowerment.
4. Provide a model for improved gender relationships, beginning at
an early age.
5. Communicate information regarding the survival, protection and
development of children, including specific messages on education,
health, nutrition and freedom from exploitation and abuse.
6. Build the capacity of African writers, researchers and artists
through the development of the Sara communication packages.

It's fascinating reading through the evaluation to see how many
different focus groups they pulled together and how much background
research went into developing the materials. It seemed like the project
developers really were interested in listening to girls and young women
to figure out how they thought and reacted to the shows, in order to
make them even better and more closely attuned to their needs.

Is anyone familiar with these?
