Hi everyone,
Our colleague from Brazil, Cintia Dias, has written a longer piece to this week's discussion topic and I will send it to the list on her behalf in three parts, to respect the 400-500 word limit for individual messages. This message contains PART I.
Cintia says: "I wish that my experience can contribute to other people to pursue some improvements in their countries, analyzing and identifying where they can really contribute and never giving up."
A complete text will be available for download at http://groups.takingitglobal.org/ycdogender/docs shortly.
Awaiting your contributions with great anticipation,
Maja

Subject: Impressions of my country
Hi dear all,
My name is Cintia Dias and I am from Brazil, Rio de Janeiro. I have been participating in the discussions about ICT4D and it really surprised me and gave me so much insights to work in projects. I am a Ph.D. researcher at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and, nowadays, my main role in my country is to contribute with the spread of participatory methodologies in projects of cooperation as well as public policies.
I have been informally involved in the dissemination of information to the Brazilian entrepreneurs and to the Brazilian bank of foment. It has been a great honor. But I know that I have the perspective of a woman that lives in the capital of Rio, an urban area, as well as near but out of the slums, and a woman that has partially conquered some respect. I am very conscious of our reality, the major part of the population of Brazil still lives in poor areas without any kind of security, hygiene and, of course, information. They are voiceless and they suffer a terrible prejudice because they are poor. I am not rich neither so poor as they are, but I have a richness that I consider nobody will take out from me, my education, the one that has opened doors in some spheres of Brazil. In Brazil, in order to be heard or you are rich or you have formal education with some experience abroad, so the education and training have been my pleasure and all the effort that I have been doing to be heard. I always suggest and help other person to do and pursue the same, at least in Brazil.
I can tell you that it was very difficult until I have some space to spread my word and I know that it will be such a huge effort to put things in practice in my country due to our heritage of patriarcalism and elitism. Normally, the institutions are dominated by some people that are very keen to their position and tradition, and some input of people from the bottom has been considered nonsense. They do not know what they talk about, they say. Sometimes, it seems to be this way because people do not have food, house or any kind of security and future for their life, and they rob, kill or they are killed and do not know really what to say even to say something; but most time, they are poor but they know what they need in order to improve their lives.
