Sujet: IT and women in poverty
Envoyé: Nov 6th, 2003 - 14:23:32

I'm currently working on a team that's implementing an IT program for
previously homeless women. As one of the most marginalized sub cultures
amongst women, women in poverty have highly limited access to IT. Homeward
Bound is providing shelter, social services, and child care for previously
homeless women interested in the field of IT. Women in the residence will
access their International Computer Driving License, and will complete a
two-year sector-specific IT training program at Seneca college in Toronto.
After the program, we have partnered with an industry council that have
guaranteed these women jobs in IT.
This is a unique project in that it both addresses the under representation
of women, in particular homeless women, in IT. But it also takes a
practical approach to the support requirements that are necessary for women
to succeed. This very often includes running a household, child care,
parenting, accessing support, managing stress, etc.
I'd appreciate any information in regards to the different ways in which
women approach IT, as well as tools that I can use to reduce inhibitions and
make it more appealing to a culture that has high levels of anxiety around
anything related to IT.
Any input you may have would be great, as we have very little information or
contact with women who advocate for representation by women in IT. Or,
conversely, if you could steer me in the right direction of other women,
networks, or organizations that may be able to share their expertise.

It sounds as though you guys are doing some really interesting things, and I
look forward to learning more. Any insight you may be able to provide would
be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Jess Tomlin
