Name: World Urban Forum - Youth Online Consultation
Categories: Sustainable Development

Description:
Welcome to the Youth Online Consulation for the World Urban Forum. This consulation is co-organized by TakingITGlobal and the Environmental Youth Alliance. It aims to gather relevant input to the WUF process.

The World Urban Forum is to be held in Vancouver in June of 2006. One of the issues to be discussed at the WUF is the role of youth in regards to cities. The focus of this online consultation is on how youth can be a positive asset, and an active player, in making more livable and sustainable cities.

To assist in the discussions, the EYA and TIG in partnership with a broad range of youth agencies based around the world have come up with the 4 different types of cities, as listed below. To learn more about these cities, please download and read the Children and Youth Friendly Cities dialogue paper (which can be downloaded below). This paper outlines many stories of amazing youth organizations that relate to the topics of the resilient city, secure city, livable city and capable city.

Chapter 1 The Resilient City
How resilient young people actively engage in their communities to overcome adversity and promote
healthier urban environments.

Youth Organization Examples:
Redwire Native Youth Media, Canada – www.redwiremag.com
Growing up in Cities – Argentina – www.unesco.org/most/guic/guicmain.htm
Concern for Working Children – Bangalore, India - www.workingchild.org

Chapter 2 The Secure City
How young people use peer-based programs and prevention models to create secure urban environments

Youth Organization Examples:
POWER Camp National, Canada – www.powercampnational.ca
Youth Community Outreach AIDS society (YouthCO), Canada – www.youthco.org

Chapter 3 The Capable City
How children and youth contribute their unique assets through participatory processes in the context of local government

Youth Organization Examples:
National Associations of Youth Councils (ANACEJ), France – www.anacej.asso.fr
One Stop Youth Centre – Nairobi, Kenya - www.onestopyouthcentre.org
Youth Outreach Team – Vancouver, Canada - www.vancouveryouth.ca

Chapter 4 Livable Cities
How young people are creating more sustainable, accessible, and inclusive urban environments.

Youth Organization Examples:
Environmental Youth Alliance Youth Gardens, Canada – www.eya.ca

Further questions that will be addressed on the specific structure of the WUF will include:

1. What should be the overarching theme?

2. What should be the four or so sub-themes (one for each day)?

3. What related initiatives/projects need to be undertaken in the short term to support the theme/sub-themes? Is there anything else that needs to happen leading up to WUF?

4. What should be the role(s) of the VWG and its Vancouver/BC based partners regarding WUF? (Noting the roles of the UN-Habitat and of the National Advisory Committee on WUF, the VWG may wish to look for unfilled niche roles to help meet WUF needs (in addition to providing theme/program advice). For example, the UN-Habitat has stated they are looking for help in increasing the number of WUF delegates from Asian countries, Indigenous Peoples and the private sector.)
