The Working Group on National and Community Service:

The Role of Service Projects in Positive Youth Development

August 30, 2007

10:00 - 12:00

Location TBA, in downtown Washington D.C.

The Working Group on National and Community Service provides a cohesive
voice for the youth service, service-learning, and civic engagement
field. The Working Group brings together national and community
organizations, schools and faith-based programs, policymakers,
academics, and others in order to produce innovative knowledge tools and
resources and to generate new strategies for making service,
service-learning, and civic engagement the common expectation and common
experience of all young people in America.

Youth service and engagement provides a significant opportunity for
substantive youth development to take place. Young people learn and
strengthen skills and assets, including those from the Search
Institute's 40 Assets, America's Promise's 5 Promises, Workforce
Readiness' Applied Skills, and the 6 C's of Leadership, which will serve
them throughout their lives. In order to implement a successful service
project that will effect positive youth development, we must determine
what aspects of youth service connect to those assets, promises, skills,
and C's. The Working Group on National and Community Service will
discuss this topic.

Some specific questions we will address include:

* What aspects of service create a lasting effect on positive
youth development?

* What skills do youth derive from participating in service
projects?

* How can we create service projects that have a lasting
beneficial impact on youth development?

The results of the Working Group will be reported in The Youth Service
Journal, Youth Service America's periodical. Please contact me if you
are interested in coming.

Thanks!
