The second week?s discussion addressed the definition and reason for youth
participation, and the issues that youth are concerned about. Mattias Lundberg
of the Children and Youth team further posed a challenge: why is youth
participation in development important?
Youth participation was defined as ?involving youth in the decision-making
process,? and ?the active involvement of youth in the world their societally
prescribed habitats, namely school and home.? Youth involvement can take place
in direct and indirect ways, and makes the most impact to the individual when
the participant is passionate about their contribution. While the issues
concerning youth are pervasive, and certain issues seem to attract more
attention than others, the passion of the individual is best harnessed when
individual finds what they are personally passionate about and pursues it.
The second challenge, the impact of youth involvement, was addressed on several
levels. Within the discussion, it was proposed that youth participate in order
to gain life skills, such as confidence and self-esteem, which will allow them
to excel as individuals. This makes a difference to the participant as an
individual. Youths also participate to make a difference in their communities,
both on a local and global scale. Youths not only will inherit global issues,
and should thus be involved to learn about them for the future, but also provide
a useful resource. This makes a difference to the outcome.
Additionally, several useful resources were provided during the course of the
discussion. Kirsten Jordan provided the initial draft of a handout on youth
development in her response. Mattias Lundberg provided a link to the World
Development Report for 2007: http://www.worldbank.org/wdr2007
Maria Cristina Gallegos of UNICEF?s Voices of Youth provided a link to their
forum on youth participation:
