Sujet: Week One Discussion: Hello from Mitty!
Envoyé: Jul 3rd, 2007 - 12:42:34

Dear All:

In my first note to the group, I neglected to introduce myself and address the
questions. Apologies for not following my own instructions : - )

My name is Mitty Steele and I work at the World Bank on the North American
Affairs team. The North American Affairs team works to build and sustain a
dialogue with American and Canadian citizens about the World Bank's mission to
reduce poverty around the world. We work with members of the American and
Canadian governments, civil society organizations, youth and academics and the
private sector. The purpose of the conference was to initiate a long-term
dialogue between youth in Canada and the U.S. and the World Bank to discuss
challenges in achieving a sustainable future.

It was great meeting all of you at the YOH! conference and to learn about the
amazing things you have been doing in your work in development and youth
advocacy at the local, regional and global level. The examples of youth
leadership and the substantive dialogue generated at the conference only
confirmed my belief that young people around world, have a unique and vital role
to play in addressing the challenges of sustainable development.

My main take away? Through the YOH! conference, I believe we achieved our
immediate goal of initiating this dialogue with youth in Canada and the U.S.,
however I realize that there is still a lot of work to be done to sustain that
dialogue, not only between youth and the World Bank, but also between youth
organizations. I believe the creation of a North American youth network could
facilitate and maintain that dialogue.

There is always a challenge to maintain momentum after a conference, since we
must all get back to the demands of our everyday life, but I hope we can find a
way to still maintain the energy and enthusiasm. I also hope you will consider
inviting your friends and colleagues who did not attend the conference, to join
the discussion, allowing for a richer dialogue.

What ever direction you choose to take in establishing this network, the course
will be paved by you and I would be happy to help in any way I can.

All the best,

Mitty
