Description:
In the Philippines, the Filipino youth (15-24) comprise 19.7% of the total population. Eastern Visayas has the second highest percentage of teenage pregnancies & the highest in premarital sex prevalence in the whole country. Alarming issues on trafficking, violence, prostitution, & discrimination on indigenous & physically challenged youth have also added to the worsening situation of young people.

Waray-Waray Youth Advocates or WARAYA is the youth arm of Family Planning Organization of the Philippines - Samar Chapter (FPOP-Samar) as one of its innovative programs and activities for young people. It was established on July 2004 from a group of young idealistic volunteers whose dream helped give birth to the organization. WARAYA envisions a society that understands, respects & nurtures the rights of young people to sexual & reproductive health.

WARAYA is the pioneer youth organization in the whole of Samar that advocates on Adolescent Sexuality & Reproductive Health & Rights. WARAYA has been fearless in views. It flaunted the language of sexuality & reproductive health, unafraid of courting the displeasure of conservatives. We paced our actions through orientations & workshops to raise the youth's level of awareness and through trainings aimed in creating a youth that is informed, empowered & responsible.

We have already educated more than a thousand young people & trained Peer Educators & Counselors that are equipped with the correct information coupled with effective strategies; & strengthened leadership skills of youth volunteers who managed to seize power & responsibilities in different organizations.

We have sustained the organization through effective linkaging and partnership. WARAYA has staged successful benefit concerts that allowed us to reach thousands of young people and proceeds from the activities paved way for the creation of a long-dreamed Center for the youth of Samar.
