Statement by the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada on the Occasion of National Aboriginal Day 2007
As Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, I invite all Canadians to be a part of this significant day - National Aboriginal Day - which allows us to show our respect for the traditions, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of Aboriginal people across this country.
Today is an opportunity for all Canadians to show their appreciation of and respect for the heritage of Aboriginal peoples. It is a day to recognize the unique achievements of Aboriginal people, in agriculture and the environment, nation building and the arts, with a national day of celebration. It is also an occasion for Inuit, Métis and First Nations to express their deep pride in their heritage and accomplishments.
June 21st begins the 11 days to Celebrate Canada! Which includes National Aboriginal Day (June 21), Saint Jean-Baptiste Day (June 24), Multiculturalism Day (June 27) and Canada Day (July 1)! National Aboriginal Day is an opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal people and their contributions that helped make Canada the great nation that it has become.
In co-operation with National Aboriginal organizations, June 21 was chosen for National Aboriginal Day because it is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. For generations it has also been an occasion for Aboriginal peoples to celebrate their cultures.
I encourage all Canadians to find out what events and activities are taking place in their communities and take the opportunity to participate. As more Canadians become interested and aware of the diverse and rich cultures of Inuit, Métis and First Nations, barriers come down and friendships begin to thrive. As we move together towards positive change - towards a strengthened relationship and towards concrete improvements in the lives of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people, I am certain that all Canadians will see the benefits.
National Aboriginal Day is a day for all Canadians - Share in the Celebration!
