Description:
The Nigeria Model United Nations is an authentic simulation of the United Nations systemby learning about the UN systems and operations of the General Assembly and other multilateral bodies. NMUN team members have fun learning about the working of world dipomacy through the periscope of current events around the world.

The Origin of the Model UN

The idea of simulating international bodies began before the birth of the United Nations when students held series of Model League of Nations in the 1920s. thus the Model UN program is a successor to a student directed simulation of what preceded the United Nations itself but it is not documented exactly how and when the Model United Nations began.

The popularity of Model UN continues to grow and today more than 200, 000 high schools and college/university students worldwide participate every year. It is how ever to be noted that many of today’s leaders in Law, Government, Business, etc, participated in the Model UN during their academic careers – from US Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer and former World Court Justice Stephen M. Schwebel to actor Samuel L. Jackson and former first daughter, Chelsea Clinton is also a Model UN Veteran.

Hence, the need for a Model UN in Nigeria is highly deepened in the urge and rising need to involve young people in participation and decision-making processes of the United Nations and also to facilitate the programme of Action for the youths around the world and to also, direct focus on the needs of young people in Africa.

The Model UN is meant to expand the objectives of the millennium Campaign in Nigeria amongst the youth communities. This project will be operated in all the States of the Federation, engaging young people to dabble into international dialogues, participation in world peace and development.

Since the establishment and adoption of the World Programme of Action for Youths by the United Nations General Assembly, the participation of the youths in the theme of the United Nations is becoming increasingly needful. The youths are the pioneering pillars for World Peace.

Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations stated in a current report that,

“No on is born a good citizen; no nation is born a democracy. Rather, both are processes that continue to evolve over a lifetime. Young people must be included from birth. A society that cuts itself from its youths severs its lifeline; it condemned to bleed to death.”

Therefore, creation of an avenue – The Model UN in the closest environment for the youth is a sure way to facilitate the visions of the UN and National Government policies.
