Sujet: ABORIGINAL YOUTH FROM CANADA & LATIN AMERICAN ON PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND to PRESENT THEIR INSPIRING VIDEO STORIES
Envoyé: Jan 15th, 2007 - 17:34:48

Stories are told better by the people who live them. Video can bring a story
to life, transporting an audience to a place they would not have known.
"First Voices - Connecting Aboriginal Youth in the North and the South" is a
documentary film-making project organized by the Atlantic Council for
International Cooperation (ACIC) through funding from the Canadian
International Development Agency (CIDA). The project began last July, and
since then, seven indigenous youth from Atlantic Canada and Latin America
(between the ages of 18 and 25) have been filming in their communities.
These youth, from Wagmatcook, NS; Big Cove, NB; Goose Bay-Happy Valley, NL;
Scotchfort, PEI; Aguas Escondidas & Guatemala City, Guatemala; and Castro,
Chiloe, Chile; are coming together in Atlantic Canada from January 18-28,
2007 to put the footage together and to speak about their experiences. The
hope is that we will begin to see connections between the stories told in
the North and the South.
All of the youth were given instruction in the use of video and Cathy
Martin, an Aboriginal film director from Nova Scotia, led the group from
Atlantic Canada through a visioning session. Project planning was self-led -
ensuring that the youth take ownership of the video, and in the process,
learn new skills and build on their sense of pride in their communities. The
cameras have been used by the youth to film the things that make them proud
of their culture, heritage and environment.
On January 18th the Canadian youth will finally meet their Latin American
counterparts in Halifax to work collaboratively on producing the
documentary. All the participants will view the raw footage and work
together to find common themes and ideas. With the assistance of Cathy
Martin and editor Ariel Nasr, we will create a short documentary that uses
the footage. It is anticipated that the documentary will be completed by
late February. At this time, we will organize special screenings throughout
Atlantic Canada and in Guatemala and Chile.
Starting from January 20th to January 25th, they will be travelling to
Wagmatcook and Lennox Island so that the participants from these areas can
show the group their communities. We are also organizing on-site speaking
engagements there, giving the youth an opportunity to share what it was like
to participate in the project and to show some of his or her footage.
On Prince Edward Island, there will be a public event on Lennox Island on
Jan 23 at 7 PM at the Band Office and on Jan 24 will host events at 11:00 AM
UPEI (seating limited, please contact Irene Novczek (at) 566-0386) and a public
speaking event in Charlottetown (Guild (at) 7:30 PM).
Please contact me if you would like more details about any of these events.
