Women migrants face "double discrimination," says UN Deutsche Presse Agentur
Published: Wednesday September 6, 2006

Vienna- Female migrants face "double discrimination" as women and as strangers in another country, said a UN official on Wednesday. Rogelio Fernandez-Castilla, director of the Technical Support Division of the UN World Population Fund (UNFPA), pointed out that nearly half the 191 million people living outside their country of origin in 2005 were women.

Added to the 94.5 million women were about 60 million children and young people, he said at a press conference in Vienna, presenting this year's UN World Population Report. The report entitled "Way of Hope" deals with the situation of women migrants.

Fernandez-Castilla said that although a majority of migrants were women and children, there had been little examination so far of their situation and needs.

He pointed out that at a UN conference in New York on September 14 and 15, there would for the first time be an international discussion at the highest level about world migration and development.

The 2006 World Population Report also spotlighted the plight of victims of trafficking in women. Total global earnings of trafficking trade were 32 billion dollars, putting it alongside the drugs and arms trade as the most profitable venture of organized crime.
