In an world that is increasingly technologically-driven, those without computers, Internet connectivity as well as IT literacy tend to fall behind in social mobility and livelihood. My project, IT EMpowering Niger!, or ITEM N! for short, aims to close the technological gap for third world communities. To begin with, my project is focusing on one of Africa’s poorest countries, Niger, as a starting point. We aim to empower Nigeriens in harnessing the power of the Internet, from equipping them with basic search engine skills to setting up blog-shops as online businesses which could be potentially useful to them in future. This is done by first equipping schools in selected Nigerien villages with donated but functioning computers and urging the local government as well as SONITEL, Niger’s major telecommunications carrier, to set up wireless broadband Internet connectivity there. We will then move on to incorporate IT literacy lessons in the Nigerien education of these village schools, ensuring that they are equipped with the knowledge of utilising technology. To make this a success, we will need your funding and support to bring computer peripherals and Internet connectivity into the villages as well as develop the essential materials needed to bring IT Literacy in educating our beneficiaries. Niger has the potential to grow and prosper so long as you provide her with the tools and expertise to do so. Let’s help Nigeriens connect with the rest of the world, for the web is a treasure trove meant to be shared and the computer is meant to be a remarkable tool for social empowerment!
