Dear European citizens,
In June, millions of people will be able to vote for the Members of the
European Parliament (MEP), representing our 27 countries until 2014. These
will be the largest transnational elections in history!
The main campaign themes are the economic crisis, climate change, energy,
and food production. The new selected MEPs will play a pivotal role in the
future of Europe and therefore we must make sure that public health and
human rights will be priorities as well!
The MEPs we get to vote for belong to national political parties. Within the
European Parliament these parties take part in an alliance that best
represents their vision. The views and opinions of these coalitions do not
necessarily reflect to the opinions the national party the MEPs belong to!
Below you can find which alliances mention youth or SRHR-related topics in
their charters and programs.

[image: File:ALDE logo.svg] Alliance of liberals and democrats for
Europe (ALDE)
In their campaign the liberals focus mostly on the economic crisis and
enlargement of the EU. However, they emphasize that the right to healthcare
is a fundamental right. ALDE has worked hard for EU-wide rules that would
give patients the right to seek healthcare everywhere in the European Union.
In addition, they currently are campaigning around human trafficking and
child sex tourism.
Greens/EFA (European free alliance)
The Greens/EFA alliance explicitly focuses on social inclusion and strives
for protection on the grounds of gender and sexual orientation:
*Our idea of social inclusion, which has to be the backbone of a social
Europe, comprehends the basic social rights, including the universal right
to income, to affordable housing, to health care. Social inclusion is also a
precondition for a gender-balanced and discrimination-free society.*
*Gender reasons to escape the country of origin like genital mutilation,
oppression and religious persecution because of gender, honour crimes,
rape, forced abortion or sterilisation must be accepted as reasons to get
asylum in all EU countries, as well as persecution on grounds of sexual
orientation.*
Socialist Group in the European Parliament
The socialist group speaks out for gender equality, violence against women
and lesbian and gay rights.
Furthermore, PSE puts much emphasis on youth:
-Young people are the future of the European Union and we believe in giving
them a say in shaping that future.
-The European Union actively invests in education and training for all young
people and supports new technologies, Internet based-learning for example
European United Left - Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL)
This group has a whole charter on womens rights, which includes:
-reproductive rights, family planning and sexual education
-the fight against trafficking in women and children and sexual
exploitation.
The Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European
Democrats (EPP-D)
EPP-D is one of the conservative groups. It wants to ensure the upholding of
strong values and the protection of marriage.
"Ensuring that national minorities can maintain and develop their culture
and the essential elements of their identity (religion, language, traditions
and cultural heritage), out of a respect for the common good."
Independence/Democracy Group (Ind/Dem)
The main goal of Ind/Dem is to reject a European constitution. The Ind/Dem
group promotes respect for traditional and cultural values.
Peoples and nations have the right to define and protect their own
traditional, ethical and cultural values. The Ind/Dem Group rejects
xenophobia, antisemitism and any other form of discrimination.
Union for Europe of the Nations (UEN)
UEN is a conservative group that highly values culture and speaks of protecting
the dignity of life.
THANK YOU, and please go out to vote!!
