Sujet: Tanzanian Govt keen on war against HIV/AIDS

The Tanzanian Government has renewed its commitment to strengthen efforts to
prevent and control the AIDS pandemic.

Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs Mr
Ramadhan Khijjah made this statement at the signing of a grant for the
HIV/AIDS Control Project, between the governments of Tanzania and Japan.

Under the agreement, the Japanese aid for HIV test kits, drugs and equipment
for control of the disease for eight years will reach 2.3 bn Yen
(approximately 28.7bn/-)

"The specific aim of this project is to improve prevention and control of
the pandemic. This assistance will help improve the supply of equipment,
drugs and facilities related to the prevention of the virus and control," Mr
Khijjah said.

He said the assistance will be prudently used in order to make more progress
in the war against the scourge.

Responding, the Japanese Ambassador, Mr Hiroshi Nakagawa said his government
was supporting the programme considering its impact on the economy.

"As we are all aware, HIV/AIDS has affected many people. The economy of the
country and those in the production sector have suffered a big blow. The
national budget is constrained, thus fewer resources go to the health
sector," Mr Nakagawa said.
