Dear Participants,
The discussion for the Commission on the Status of Women has begun. I have attached the two previous emails with background information and the discussion questions in case some of you did not receive them.
I would really like to encourage you to give input on the topic of men and women sharing caregiving responsibilities, especially in the context of HIV/AIDS. This is your opportunity to tell those in UN how you feel about the topic, and this is an important issue for not only women but also men to discuss!
If you would prefer that your name and affiliation does not appear with your response, you may email me with your responses at andreap (at) youthlink.org. I will remove any identifying information before sending it out to the whole group.
Let the UN know how you feel on this subject and have your voices heard!
Thank you for participating,
Andrea Prince

Background Information
Thank you for your participation in our e-consultation on "Equal Sharing of Caregiving"! As a preparation for this consultation, we are sending some basic background information on the United Nations view on women's rights and roles as caregivers, especially in the context of HIV/AIDS. The discussion questions will be sent to you in English, Spanish, and French in a separate e-mail shortly.
The 53rd session of the Commission on the Status of Women will be held from March 2 - 13, 2009. The priority theme for this session will be "The equal sharing of responsibilities between women and men, including caregiving in the context of HIV/AIDS." The review theme will be "Equal participation of women and men in decision-making processes at all levels."
The promotion of equal rights for men and women has been an issue that the United Nations has worked hard to encourage in all countries. The UN believes that the women should be involved in all areas of society and decision making.
There are many barriers in societies that keep women from engaging in equally outside of the home. Cultural and social norms, traditional beliefs, and stereotypes are often responsible for perpetuating this unequal sharing of domestic responsibilities between women and men, and have obstructed the advancement of gender equality and women's empowerment.
Women often experience higher responsibilities for both paid and unpaid caregiving in their families in community. Women put in a higher number of unpaid work in the household than men customarily do and are not recognized for their contribution. In communities where HIV/AIDS is prevalent, women take on even more responsibility caring for those who are sick and themselves. An equal sharing of responsibility can provide women with a better quality of life and leave them more free time to engage in
decision-making.
