Description:
The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW)
March 2-13, 2009
The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is a commission of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations established in 1946. It is dedicated exclusively to gender equality and the advancement of women in political, economic, civil, social, and education fields. Every year, representatives of 45 member states gather at the UN Headquarters in New York to evaluate progress on gender equality, identify challenges, set global standards and formulate concrete policies to promote gender equality and advancement of women worldwide.
This year the commission will be discussing "The equal sharing of responsibilities between women and men, including caregiving in the context of HIV/AIDS." The review theme will be "Equal participation of women and men in decision-making processes at all levels."
In a joint report by UNAIDS / UNFPA / UNIFEM it is estimated that women account for nearly half of the 40 million people in the world with HIV/AIDS. It is also estimated that 90% of care related to the illness falls to the woman. This care is also in addition to her duties in the household, such as, cooking, caring for children, cleaning, and in some areas, fetching wood and water. It is seen that HIV/AIIDS places an even greater burden on women. When more caregiving responsibility falls to women, their performance and ability to work often suffers. This trend creates a cycle of poverty for a woman that goes through generations.
Women are not the only ones affected by this and young people must speak out about this import issue. This consultation is a chance to have young people’s voices heard in the United Nations. The discussion will take place from October 27- November 14, 2008. Please join with other GYAN members across the world to discuss this important issue that affects young people.
