Name: Global Youth Service Day - Saint John, NB, Canada
Description:
Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is the largest annual celebration of young volunteers, where millions of young people in countries everywhere carry out thousands of community improvement projects. All organizations are encouraged to plan youth-led community service projects that involve the broader community in GYSD or showcase existing projects to the media and surrounding community.

Four big events were scheduled in Saint John:

April 24 1-3pm - "Tunes for a Toonie"
Woodlawn Learning Centre will hold an outdoor concert Thursday afternoon. Students will gain admission by bringing a can of food for the local food bank as well as $2. Student bands will perform and a BBQ will be on site to raise extra funds. The money will be donated to Malaria No More. Students also provided malaria education sessions to each class to raise awareness.

April 25 12-1:30 - King Square Youth Rally
A noon hour youth rally will be held in King Square to celebrate GYSD. There will be music and a BBQ to raise funds for Malaria No More. The Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Federal Member of Parliament will be officially opening GYSD 2008. Our Youth Ambassador will be speaking as well, representing the youth of Saint John. A GYSD flag will be raised at City Hall and the weekend will get an official start.

April 25 5:30-9:30pm - Youth Malaria Dance
The Resource Centre for Youth, Boys and Girls Club and the YMCA are cooperating to host a youth dance at the Boys and Girls Club. Youth aged 5-17 are invited to attend. Funds raised will go to the Boys and Girls Club and Malaria No More.

April 26 1-5pm - DDR-a-thon
Two local high schools will face off at Brunswick Square Mall atrium for a Dance Dance Revolution showdown. There will also be malaria nets and education videos playing to bring awareness to Malaria No More. The individual schools have been holding concerts, DDR events, etc. to raise money for Malaria No More. The winning school will be based on money raised plus the DDR scores for the day.
