Subject: Calling for Applications for Major Group on Children & Youth -
Deadline July 12th, 12:00 am EST
To Whom it May Concern:
My name is Alex Ticas and I am currently one of the Ad Hoc Committee Members
for the Children & Youth Major Group (commonly referred to as the Youth
Caucus).
On behalf of the Ad Hoc committee, we are calling for applications from
young leaders from around the world - who are interested, willing, and able
- to help lead the Children & Youth Major Group this upcoming year.
Context:
The United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (UN CSD) is a forum
that was created out of discussions at the Rio Conference in 1992. It is an
annual conference held at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.
The CSD goes through two year cycles and in turn its purpose is twofold. In
the first year of a cycle, governments and civil society come together to
learn about best practices and lessons learned from around the world. In the
second year, the knowledge gleaned from the first year and from other
opportunities to provide input throughout the year are culminated in a
document that is agreed to by the end of the second year. This document is
agreed to by all governments present and is used as a guideline for
sustainability initiatives in their respective countries.
Civil society is organized through 9 major groups. These major groups
include a group for women, one for indigenous people and another for
children and youth. We are participants in the major group for children and
youth. The Major Group on Children and Youth works to ensure that children
and young people's perspectives are represented at each session of the
United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development, striving to increase
their visibility and participation at each stage. The Youth Caucus provides
a venue for young people to raise their concerns, speak up for themselves
and their communities and ultimately, bring about change on those issues
affecting us all.
Opportunity for increased Regional Representation/Input
The Major Group on Children & Youth would like to continue to maintain and
develop representation from all regions, including yours. The children and
youth major group will have two organizing partners, regional coordinators,
and a steering committee. The roles of these organizations and individuals
are outlined in the attached document, or click
http://www.youen.org/?q=node/114. We would like to encourage your
organization or individuals from your organization that are able to take on
the responsibilities outlined, to put forward your name for a position. In
this way, regional coordinators, steering committee, and organizing partners
can collaborate more closely to bring the perspectives of people from your
region to the outcome documents and guidelines being created at the UN CSD.
The purpose of electing the steering committee, regional coordinators &
organizing partners is to enhance the Youth Caucus' ability to contribute to
the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development. It is our hope
that through creating regional representatives and defining six regions, the
diversity of voices heard at the UN CSD will be increased.
Effective organization has been a long-standing need of the Children and
Youth Major Group; the Ad-Hoc committee of CSD 17 has tried to meet that
need through creating the attached Major Group on Children & Youth Structure
in close collaboration with members of the Youth Caucus.
If you are not interested in serving in this capacity, it would still be
really wonderful for your organization or individuals that are interested to
get connected to this process and provide input through the regional
coordinator that is elected in your region. We know that everyone has a
great deal to contribute and there are so many opportunities for learning.
It would be wonderful to generate this learning together!
