The aim of the Community and Race Relations Committee of Peterborough (CRRC)
is to promote positive race relations in Peterborough. CRRC provides
services in education, consulation, and capacity building to the
Peterborough community. CRRC is hiring two employees for summer '09: a
Community Outreach and Publicity Assistant, and a Research and Publications
Assistant. *Please note that these positions have different eligibility
requirements.*

1) Community Outreach and Publicity Assistant*

The Community Outreach and Publicity Assistant will focus on two areas of
work:

1) Building on the work already done by CRRC on attacks against Asian
Anglers in Ontario, the employee will coordinate with the local
municipality, tourism offices, the Community Reference Group, sport groups,
and the general public to develop Public Service Announcements on fishing
safety and race relations for the Canadian Sportfishing TV Series.

2) CRRC has identified the need for a publicity strategy to make the
Peterborough community better aware of our services in the areas of
education, consultation, and capacity building. The employee will work to
increase the profile of CRRC in the community, spearheading initiatives such
as the creation of a membership database, pamphlets, posters, a newsletter,
and a display. The employee will also liaise with other social service
groups in Peterborough (especially Aboriginal and ethnospecific groups) to
develop and strengthen organizational relationships and suggest possible
joint initiatives for the coming year.

In addition to these projects, the employee will complete general office
duties, including maintaining an office presence, liaising with the board of
directors, and carrying out activities related to CRRC's mandate of
education, consulation, and capacity building as required.

The ideal candidate will possess a good understanding of race-related
issues; background in publicity and outreach; and strong networking
andteam-work skills.

*Contract details*: 36.25 hrs/week for 7 weeks (start date Monday June 8th),
$9.50/hr.

*Eligibility*: Youth 15 to 24 years old who are eligible to work in Canada
and are a permanent resident of Ontario (up to 29 for a person with a
disability as defined under the Ontario Human Rights Code) upon commencement
of employment.

*2) Research and Publications Assistant*

The Research and Publications Assistant will create an Anti-Racism Education
Workshop Manual for use by the CRRC in elementary and secondary schools in
Peterborough. The manual will include a number of workshops
andpresentations with discussion questions based on CRRC's growing
film
collection, as well as other educational resources on race/racism relevant
to students in Peterborough. The employee will also produce a pamphlet or
other promotional material to advertise CRRC's workshop series to teachers
in Peterborough, in coordination with the Community Outreach and Publicity
Assistant.

In addition to developing the workshop manual, the employee will complete
general office duties, including maintaining an office presence, liaising
with the board of directors, and carrying out activities related to CRRC's
mandate of education, consulation, and capacity building as required.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in anti-racist theory
and the history of race relations in Canada; the ability to clearly explain
race-related concepts to elementary and high school audiences; experience in
youth engagement and workshop facilitation; and excellent research
andwriting skills.

*Contract details*: 30 hrs/week for 7 weeks (start date Monday June 8th),
$9.50/hr. *

*Eligibility: *Applicants must be students meeting the following criteria:

- Are between 15 and 30 years of age;
- Have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic
year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next
academic year;
- Are Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or have official refugee
protection status under the *Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*; and
- Are legally entitled to work in Canada, according to relevant
provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
