Hello Dear People,
As some of you may know, I am from the Southern most part of Nigeria, the
troubled Niger-delta region. This region is of immense importance to Nigeria and
the rest of the world, owing to its vast oil resources. Nearly 90 percent of
Nigeria's foreign exchange aernings comes from the Niger-delta.
There has been serious agitations over the last couple of years, resulting in
serious militant activities. The effect of these activities has been a mass exit
of companies, leaving youth unemployed. Plus the security situation in the
region has given birth to grave concerns within the region and beyond.
Various efforts have been undertaken to identify and solve the problems of the
Niger-delta, including intervention agencies like the present Niger-delta
Development Commission and international efforts including a panel of Nobel
Laurates. However, much more needs to be done. The Federal government has
recently set-up a techncal committee to assess the situation and prepare the
ground for a Niger-delta dialogue. I think that youth can play a critical role
and this is where I think RYC members come-in.
I am planning a huge media campaign in support of peace and development efforts
in the region, particularly focusing attention on the issues of youth
development: employment, education, health service delivery and a youth
ambassador programme. I think that the Niger-delta dialogue is a critical
opportunity that should not be missed, and I need your help to raise the issues
affecting youth in the region. Some of the activities I plan to undertake is a
series of structured online dialogue, media events and a RYC ND Intervention
initiative, where I hope each of you will aggree to sign onto a petition, and
saying at least one paragraph of what you want change you want to see in the
region.
Events in the Niger-delta are very well documented, and you may want to browse
the internet to access such information. We are partners in development, lets
make it happen!
