Dear Distinguished Millennium Development Ambassadors,
The July 2008 Millennium Development Ambassadors Assembly in Nigeria
shall hold on July 26, 2008 at the Modotel Hotels, Owerri, Imo State
from 10.00 a.m. The Assembly shall be attended by nearly 150
Millennium Development Ambassadors from across the country with some
Millennium Development Volunteers participating as observers.
The theme of this month's assembly is MDG 3: "Promoting Gender
Equality and Women Empowerment" . Several presentations on the theme
shall be made and the keynote lecture shall be "Building a Culture of
Gender Equality and Women Empowerment" . The paper shall discuss the
issue of gender equality and women empowerment at the four basic
realms of human relationship in the family. These shall include
promoting gender equality by children, among siblings, between
couples and by parents toward their children.
As part of the Assembly, the Africa Regional office of Teachers
Without Borders shall introduce the renewed Certificate of Teaching
Mastery which includes a special course on the MDGs and update
participants on developments concerning the NYSC Teacher Training
Program and the upcoming launch of Teachers Without Borders (Kenya
Chapter). Also, some distinguished VIPs shall be commissioned as
Millennium Development Ambassadors during the assembly.
Two Millennium Development Volunteers, Amarachi Igboegu from San
Francisco, USA and Jane Yumi Chong from the Duke University, USA who
are volunteering with Teachers Without Borders in Abuja, Nigeria
shall also address the Assembly and specifically report on their new
initiative "Classrooms Without Walls", a basic literacy program
launched at the Jabi Motor park for drivers and other hawkers at the
motor park.
Also, some of the Millennium Development Ambassadors' vehicles shall
be decorated with the special vehicle license approved by the Federal
Government of Nigeria for the MDAs in Nigeria. Meanwhile, all MDAs
are from August 2008 to be offered a group life assurance to the sum
of N2.5million (about US $20,000) by one of the leading insurance
companies in Nigeria. In addition, the Federal Ministry of Commerce
and Industry has granted the trademark of Millennium Development
Ambassadors to Teachers Without Borders. The Trademark approval
certificate has been issued to our office already. By this
development, the Millennium Development Ambassadors program is a
registered Trademark of Teachers Without Borders.
Once again, I sincerely want to thank all the MDAs who have
consistently supported our modest efforts and want to congratulate
all of us on these positive developments. I am looking forward to
welcoming all of you at Owerri, Imo State on July 26, 2008.
As "it takes a teacher to raise a village" let us remember that we
have been called to facilitate the realization of the MDGs in order
to free humanity from poverty and the many calamities befalling all
of us.
Many thanks and best wishes.
