Sujet: Actions for a democratic Information Society
Envoyé: Mar 14th, 2003 - 14:11:21

  Hello to you all,

It's been a pleasure reading your messages so far. It looks as though we
will be receiving thought generating interventions.

I'd like to clarify Nicole's confusion about the question that the
Consultation will be adressing in its conclusion. That question is aimed to
point towards the actions and values that we must undertake to support the
emergence of more just and democratic information societies.

To arrive at those conlusion, each week we will be focussing on different
thematics. Of course, Nicole is right, to achieve a more just vehicule we
must be more just ourselves. But that is often easier said that done. What
we need to look at for example is how we can encourage democratic
initiatives with regards to the information society, what recommendations we
can put forwards to our governement to sustain these ideals and values that
we share. We can brainstorm together abouth those actions in the next weeks
repecting the different thematics

As Canadians who work internationally, we are faced with a wide sprectrum of
obstacles that come in the way of an equalitarian and democratic use of
information technologies, such as unequal acces to education, welth,
ressources and information. How can we imagine a better distribution and
more fairness in the access? What actions can we undertake?

Be it working with marginalised groups on creating access centres or putting
together virtual libraries such as Daniel's project ?

What are your thoughts on that?

As Nicole says the vehicule to be democratic must be based on such values.
And how is that achieved? Does it mean that we must first educate justice,
democracy so that the Information society we build is based on those values?

Let's think about it together

Cheers,

Alexandra
