Fellowship in Poverty Analysis and the Millennium Development Goals for
Young African Professionals
Deadline for Application:

Duration of Assignment/Conditions:
-Five months without the possibility of extension
-It is open only to nationals of ECA member states.
-Fellows will receive a lump-sum payment of USD 4,000 per month and a
round-trip air ticket to Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia.
-Fellows cannot be employed on ECA or UN regular positions within six months
of completion of a fellowship period.
-Fellows will agree to a work programme defined mutually with the receiving
section, the MDGs/Poverty Analysis and Monitoring Section of the African
Center on Gender and Social Development.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
This fellowship is located in the African Centre for Gender and Social
Development Division (ACGSD) of the United Nations Economic Commission for
Africa (ECA).
The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) is the regional arm
of the United Nations in Africa. Its mandate is to promote the social and
economic development of Africa. As part of its program of support to member
States, ECA is inviting applications from qualified young African
Professionals to the ECA Fellowships for Young African Professionals
programme.
These Fellowships are in poverty analysis and policy interventions to
achieve the targets of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and
constitute an important element of the Commission's efforts to assist its
member States build capacity in poverty analysis and monitoring, and
tracking progress on the Millennium Development Goals.
The Fellowship programme is targeted a young Africans. Candidates applying
for the position must be below 30 years of age when entering the programme.
They must have Masters Degree and currently enrolled in a Ph.D programme or
have admission to do so.
The programme aims to provide practical, on-the-job experience to the young
professionals as they prepare either for their doctoral studies and/or for
possible future career assignments at African development institutions,
teaching and research think tanks or member States' government institutions
upon completion of their higher degrees.
It will also familiarize them with the Commission's broad programmes and
services to member States and sub-regional bodies in addressing the poverty
and social dimensions of the challenges to Africa's development.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Fellows will agree to a work programme
defined mutually with the hiring manager.
Assignments within the respective area of focus may include, but are not
limited to, collect, evaluate, interpret, analyze specified statistics and
qualitative socio-economic information, especially in the context of Poverty
Reduction Strategy Papers and the Millennium Development Goals obtained from
a variety of sources; maintain databases; contributing to reports, briefing
notes, and assist in the organization and servicing of expert group
meetings, workshops, and seminars; and fulfill various other administrative
tasks for the final delivery of ECA's services.
