Will you like to harness the power of public speaking to your advantage and success? Have you always dreamt of giving a good speech that will linger on in the minds of your audience? Do you freeze at the very thought of standing before a large group? Do you want to effectively communicate your ideas and vision in order to influence others? Did you know that good communication can aid you develop good interview skills? Are you aware that a good speaker will almost invariably have a good social network? If you will like the answer to all these questions and begin to reap the benefits of good speaking and effective communication then you need to improve your presentation skills and this workshop is for you. What will you Learn? The workshop will begin with all the participants presenting a one minute prepared speech which will be recorded. The idea behind this is to get all the participants into the world of presenting and to be able to relate to the issues surrounding public speaking. We will also identify your unique speaking style so that we can build on it for the rest of the day and you can tell where your strengths are. We will note any weaknesses too which we will help you to improve on during the course of the day. Be assured that this will be a fun exercise. Next we will look at the rudiments of speech preparation. We will learn how to build a good introduction for a speech, how to develop the main body or message of your speech and techniques behind effective conclusions. We will also consider some top qualities that help enhance a speech and make it pleasurable for your listeners, namely: Gestures, the power of the pause, extemporaneous delivery, Good visual contact, speaking in a relaxed conversational manner, the power of questions and much more. We will also look at some great tips to help improve your ability as a good public speaker. Tips to help you overcome nervousness, improve and recognize the power of positive body language and so forth will be looked at. As we round up the days activities we will look at a great speech together on video and consider some of the things that have made it great. We will be looking at you feeding in your learning for the day into this exercise. Finally, you will be asked to present your one minute speech again and hopefully this time there will be some notable improvement to give you the confidence that you need to deliver memorable and effective speeches. There will be a certificate of attendance provided at the end of the day's activities. What You Need to do? Well, come prepared with a one minute speech on any subject of your choice. This will be all you need to bring on the day. There will be a course workbook with which you will be able to take notes in. What Are the Course Details? What About the Facilitator: Ken Okolo? Ken Okolo is a graduate in Computer Science from the London Metropolitan University, London, England. He worked with Tower Hamlets Summer University in London where he pioneered a program to assist young people. He was Job Ready Officer helping youths to develop the soft and interpersonal skills needed to excel in the work place( www.summeruni.org/projects/job-ready). Part of that training included helping to hone their public speaking skills in order to build confidence. He has been involved with public speaking from the age of 6.
