Hello all:
Thank you for posting your comments and sharing thoughts on the 3rd week's
discussions, "Progressive Involvement: Youth at Rio - IGF 2007." We are in
the last hour of the 3-week discussion but I'm sure that this won't be the
last time we'll discuss the IG process as stakeholders. Following the
mid-week review, I am glad to share this summary of the week with you.
The mid-week questions were, "What things would you term *progressive*
involvement?" and "What will you(th) be doing at Rio at IGF 2007?" Pascal
opined that "... we have to continue to discuss and share documents or
report of [the] last IGF. Our discussions will first of all concern the
analysis of last IGF recommendations, follow[ed] by monitoring and our own
evaluation of steps covered". He continued, by saying that "[w]e have to
continue our discussions after this e-consultation, we have to lean on our
daily activities..."
I honestly think we should take Vladimir's advise that "[i]t is of utmost
importance to maintain this excellent team atmosphere and keep this team
working". His mention of the hyper-text commenting tool (which I have
experienced during my DiPLO sojourn :) brings additional value to the table
in terms of possible "drafting [of] common papers and action plans," and it
would be great to take up the offer: "We will be happy to host some next
round of discussions on our platform, aiming to reach concrete proposals,
conclusions and sum-up papers." Vladimir continued by stating that,
"Building awareness among the 'leaders' of the IGF is a very important
issue. As stated before, I do not have the impression that most of the IGF
leaders and key-persons do understand the importance of youth involvement,
nor the proper way of their involvement. ... the youth presenting is what we
need. And not only on one session, but on all panels, sessions, discussions.
At every panel table, there has to be a youth representative. Youth should
become a stakeholder officially. Not declaratively, but in practice."
Ugo, in his contribution, stated that "[p]rogressive involvement to me
simply means being a constructive part of each stage of the process. We can
achieve this through our personal, regional, online and community awareness
and resource contributions as the process unfold." Korede brought in another
perspective when he said, "[m]y challenge in participating adequately brings
to the fore a major challenge in the use of ICTs and the IG process - the
challenge of electricity (adequate and timely supply of electricity)." I
quite agree with Robert's comment that we should ensure"... that we
strengthen our networking, advocacy and "marketing" efforts in these regions
[where there was little representation in this online discussion] in the
lead up to IGF Rio 2007. Equivalently, we should also be on the look out for
new, fresh faces and personalities that will carry the youth voice in the
coming years of the IGF process."
Once again, thank you for your comments, suggestions and general input. It
is clear that we need to sustain the discussions -- and that there's a lot
that we can do together. The road to Rio is paved with many intervention
opportunities, and what we make of it will determine how much fulfilment
you(th) will have at Rio 2007. I personally look forward to that space
between now and Rio, and to the opportunity of collaborating with you to
implement the action-laden recommendations of the past 3 weeks.
Best regards,
---
