Sujet: RE: [YouthMigration] International Migrants Day
Envoyé: Dec 19th, 2006 - 13:13:58

  Dear all,

Just a quick note on the dates for the Forum that I mentioned yesterday in my message - they have not yet been confirmed by the Belgian government. The Forum will most likely take place in July, but details on the dates and the logistics for civil society participation will be confirmed later.

All the best,

Vidar

Subject: [YouthMigration] International Migrants Day

Dear all,

Today is the International Migrants Day, the day to focus on the lives of
the million of migrants around the world and how we can improve their rights
and opportunities. Do you have a personal experience of migration or opinion
that you would like to share with the world? TakingITGlobal’s next Panorama
issue will focus on Forced Migration and all young people are invited to
submit their writings. For more information, please follow this link:
http://www.takingitglobal.org/misc/click.html?SpotlightID=585.

Also today there was a meeting between Gregory Maniatis, the assistant of
Peter Sutherland (UN special representative on international migration and
development), where he updated members of civil society on the follow-up
from the High-Level Dialogue in September.

Belgium will host the Migration Forum on July 9th-11th 2007, and will
attempt to make as many places as possible open for civil society. July 9th,
the first day of the forum, will be the day when civil society will be able
to contribute, while the last two days will be dedicated to talks between
governments. Details on who will be able to participate, and whether funding
and visa assistance will be available, will be worked out in the next couple
of months. I will keep you updated.

Mr. Maniatis emphasized that the forum will not be a policy-making body, but
rather a place where governments can come together and share experiences on
effective migration policies. Many governments still resist to give up their
sovereignty on migration policies to an intergovernmental body. When asked
if youth will be on the agenda in Belgium, Mr. Maniatis said all migration
issues affect young people and that many migration policies are targeted
towards young people.

I gave Mr. Maniatis a copy of the report from the e-consultation, and he
promised to read it (let’s hope he does!) and said he appreciated the format
of e-consultations because it allowed so many people to participate.

Please keep sharing migration-related news and resources here, and let’s try
to make sure there are young people at the table in Belgium in July!

All the best,
