Update on recent migration developments

Hey all,
Its been a while since this group has been consulted, but I wanted to give
everyone an update on recent developments on the issue of migration at the
UN.
The final report of the consultation on youth and migration was distributed
to several ministers and government delegates at the High-Level Dialogue at
the UN in September. You can download the report here:

After the High-Level Dialogue, migration was discussed in the Second
Committee of the General Assembly. Belgium has offered to host a Global
Migration Forum in July 2007, as a space where the migration dialogue can
continue. It is still not clear exactly what the Forum will look like, and
Governments are still debating what the objectives of the forum will be.
In a briefing with Hania Zlotnik, Director of the UN Populations Division,
she mentioned that Governments are more interested in working with NGOs to
enhance the positive aspects of migration, rather than focus on the
downfalls.
Youth migration has not really been an issue in the follow-up debates at the
UN, but it has been brought up by both the Secretary General and the General
Assembly President on other occasions.
Following the release of a report of the High-Level Group of the Alliance of
Civilizations, Kofi Annan pointed to the areas of education, media, youth
and migration to build bridges and promote a culture of respect. Read the

If you have further updates about migration and youth, please feel free to
share them with the group here. It will be an ongoing debate, and I hope
this group can serve as a forum where we can discuss and update each other
on how migration affects young people and how we can best address it and
make sure young people are represented in the decision-making.
