Hello all,
So excited to see that the meeting is on a Thursday (Thanks Rebecca)! As
I was only able to make the first meeting, I'll tell you a bit about
myself.
I have been working in community development initiatives for about 10
years - a Montrealer, my first contact with the sector was through
Santropol Roulant, a non-profit youth-led meals-on-wheels which works on
breaking down social isolation, food security and intergenerationalism.
I moved to Toronto just over a year and a half ago to work at the
Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation. We identify and support talented
students who show promise of leadership and a strong commitment to
service in the community by funding their studies on Canadian campuses.
Each scholar is paired with a mentor for their 4 years at university,
and has access to funding and opportunities for travelling and
contributing to other communities abroad, and public policy work during
their summers.
In both of the organizations I mentioned above, there are large
volunteer bases and a well-developed alumni program in the second.
I'm looking forward to meeting you all,
Nadira

Hey everyone,
I'll be able to attend on the 27th.
Meal Exchange just received an 18 month grant to develop our alumni
program,
which will allow our students to continue to be involved in the
organization, after they graduate, as mentors for our chapters and new
projects.
The project is being developed by alumni and will ultimately become a
relatively self-directed initiative by alumni (with input from the Board
and
staff). It includes a conference, online learning modules and other
resources to enable them to remain active contributors to the growth of
the
organization.
Everything's still in development, so it's a perfect time to chat with
others about what they're doing.
Anyone wanting to chat before the Juicer...give me a shout.

Thanks to everyone (all 3!) who made it out to the last Youth Juicer!
I'm proposing Thursday, July 27th for our next get-together. The theme
for
the evening will be Volunteer and Alumni networks - have you got one? Is
it
useful? How did it come about? What does it contribute to your
organization?
Here at YCI, Erin Nesbitt is building a Volunteer Action Network - an
opportunity for alumni of our overseas volunteer projects to build on
the
skills and experience of their overseas project to effect positive
social
change in their own communities.
Please let me know if you plan on attending the Youth Juicer on July
27th!
If you're interested, YCI is also going to be hosting a OCIC networking
breakfast on July 20th. Here's the info:
OCIC Toronto Breakfast Meeting - July 20th
This month join OCIC colleagues and Youth Challenge International to
discuss
issues surrounding Volunteer Management, including volunteer roles,
recruitment and retention. This meeting will be hosted by YCI (20 Maud
Street, Toronto) from 8:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Please RSVP with Genevieve
Drouin at genevieve (at) rooftops.ca or
416.366.1445 if you plan to attend. Monthly Breakfast Meetings are an
opportunity for OCIC members and friends to connect informally, on a
regular
basis. Light breakfast and coffee are provided, and all are welcome.
Thanks!
Cheers,
Rebecca
