Hi there, I've been on the list for a while but I haven't introduced myself
yet so here goes... and thanks in advance for this opportunity to connect
with y'all.
My name is Jenny Katz and I work at Turning Point Youth Services. I'm in
the counselling department and I work primarily with youth involved with the
criminal justice system as well as their families. I also run a group for
young women who have experienced violence.
In December of last year, in an effort to find out how, and what others were
doing related to the gun violence in Toronto, a meeting was called and 50
people came from across the city.
We have continued to meet in different constellations for
* support
* sharing program ideas
* learning from each other re: our areas of specialization
* updates as to what is going on in different parts of the city
and now, have started to talk about cross-sectoral program development.
At this point, we still called "the network". We are from all different
agencies and organizations that serve youth, we focus on issues related to
racism and the unequal distribution of wealth in the city. We also attempt
to be holistic in what we do and how we do it (mind, body and spirit).
The network is still in its infancy, however also exists in the form of
internet communication - where we share job postings, opportunities, events,
trainings, questions, ideas and discussion related to youth and youth
programming.
If you're interested in learning more about the network feel free to give me
a call or an email.
Bye for now,
Jenny

Subject: *****SPAM***** [YouthJuice] Youth Juicer - July 27th
Thanks to everyone (all 3!) who made it out to the last Youth Juicer!
I'm proposing Thursday, July 27th for our next get-together. The theme for
the evening will be Volunteer and Alumni networks - have you got one? Is it
useful? How did it come about? What does it contribute to your organization?
Here at YCI, Erin Nesbitt is building a Volunteer Action Network - an
opportunity for alumni of our overseas volunteer projects to build on the
skills and experience of their overseas project to effect positive social
change in their own communities.
Please let me know if you plan on attending the Youth Juicer on July 27th!
If you're interested, YCI is also going to be hosting a OCIC networking
breakfast on July 20th. Here's the info:
OCIC Toronto Breakfast Meeting - July 20th
This month join OCIC colleagues and Youth Challenge International to discuss
issues surrounding Volunteer Management, including volunteer roles,
recruitment and retention. This meeting will be hosted by YCI (20 Maud
Street, Toronto) from 8:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Please RSVP with Genevieve
Drouin at genevieve (at) rooftops.ca or
416.366.1445 if you plan to attend. Monthly Breakfast Meetings are an
opportunity for OCIC members and friends to connect informally, on a regular
basis. Light breakfast and coffee are provided, and all are welcome.
Thanks!
Cheers,
Rebecca
