Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the group and I don't know too many of you, so I thought I'd
introduce myself!
My name is Julie Baldassi, I'm 19 years old and I'm from Burlington,
Ontario. I'm a recent Guyana Alumni with Youth Challenge International. I
had an absolutely amazing time, and I totally fell in love with that
country! It was such a great opportunity, and has really inspired me to want
to make a difference. Since I've been home I've become involved in an
Australian aid and development organization, called The Oaktree Foundation.
The Oaktree Foundation was founded three years ago in Australia, and has had
enormous success and growth. It has grown to every state in Australia and
now internationally in Boston and Toronto. Its now my job to start up the
Toronto branch, which I am really excited about! Oaktree is an entirely
youth run Christian based non profit organization thats all about
partnering youth in the developed world with youth in the developing world
to work together. Here in Toronto, we will be doing things like fundraising
and advocacy events, to support our projects over seas. We currently have
projects in South Africa, Ghana, as well as a lot of fundraising was done in
Australia for the Tsunami. The projects we have are focused on reaching out
in communities to people disadvantaged by extreme poverty and giving them
the training and skills that they can use in their lives. Oaktrees role is
to support these projects, and to help them achieve their goals. Our mission
is to empower developing communities through education in a way that is
sustainable.
There are many different ways in which you can become involved with Oaktree,
whether it be leading the fundraising team or mentoring a youth, there is
something for everyone. In Toronto, we are currently recruiting a team of
volunteers who are dedicated to making a positive change in the world around
us.
I look forward to meeting many of you on Wednesday. See you soon!
Julie
