Subject: RE: Groundbreaking Research - The War Child Canada Youth Opinion
Poll!
Importance: High

Dear Colleagues (and supporters of global education and youth engagement!),

I hope that all is well with you. The National Youth Programming Team at
War Child Canada has been working on conducting the first-ever national
opinion poll on Canadian youth opinion on global issues and Canada's role in
the world. I am thrilled to present you with the finalized report of The
War Child Canada Youth Opinion Poll in both official languages. Conducted by
Environics Research Group, the groundbreaking War Child Canada Youth Opinion
Poll is the first comprehensive, national public opinion survey of young
Canadians' attitudes towards human rights and international issues. In
total, 750 Canadian youth from all parts of the country and between the ages
of 15-24 were surveyed, yielding a strongly reliable result and a margin of
error of only 3.6 percent.

It is our goal in presenting this report, to empower and embolden Canadian
youth and to assist their meaningful and substantial contribution to local,
national and international communities. It is also our goal to convince
policy-makers, community leaders and the Canadian public of the importance,
relevance and value of youth participation.

Some key survey findings:

* Peacekeeping and foreign aid are seen as
Canada's most positive contributions to the world. Youth give Canada highest
ratings for peacekeeping and the

response to the Asian tsunami, and lowest ratings on its
response to HIV/AIDS in Africa and the crisis in Sudan's Darfur region.

* The vast majority of youth surveyed believe
that the level of war and conflict in the world is getting worse, not
better.

* Just over half of youth think Canada's
military is currently too small, very few think it is too big.

* By a six-to-one margin, youth prefer that
Canada work more closely with the United Nations than with the United States
in working to resolve global problems.

One-half of youth think that Canada should be doing more to develop a
separate cultural identity from Americans.

* Two-thirds of youth are satisfied with the
government's response to terrorism.

* Almost all Canadian youth believe that youth
can make a difference in making the world a better place to live; however,
most youth also believe that

decision- makers do not take young people's views on world
issues seriously.

* Most Canadian youth are not well-informed
about contemporary world issues such as global inequities, human rights, the
HIV/AIDS pandemic, terrorism and

the environment; in fact, almost 40% of youth could not name a
country where human rights abuses are occurring today.

* There were some surprising regional variances
in the survey results; youth within Quebec appear to be much better informed
about global issues than youth

within the rest of Canada.

Our hope is that others will be as motivated by the results of this survey
as we have been. On our part, we plan to share the results of this survey
as widely as possible with the youth, educators and partners with whom we
work. We encourage all readers of the report to do the same in order to
ensure that the youth represented in this survey are heard and, most
importantly, will begin to have a stronger influence over Canada's decisions
on global issues.

I've also included a link to the news section of our website that publicizes
the release of the poll: http://www.warchild.ca/news_article.asp?ID=158

Thanks, everyone; I hope that you are inspired and motivated by the results
of this groundbreaking initiative! Please let us know what you think; we
would love to hear from you about this. We also encourage you to distribute
the results of this survey as widely as possible to everyone in your own
networks; let's help Canadian youth have their voices heard.

Best regards,

Maria
