World Youth Forum: http://www.eya.ca/wuf/wuf_wuf.html
Background
The World Youth Forum is a three-day youth conference taking place June 16th
to 18th (the weekend before the WUF). The Youth Forum will be a chance for
young people involved in exciting youth-led projects around the world to
meet, share best practices, connect and collaborate with each other.
The Youth Forum will bring together 150 international youth delegates with
150 North-American youth to discuss youth-led projects, prepare for their
participation in the World Urban Forum and write a youth declaration that
will be officially presented there.
Youth Forum Delegates will be from all walks of life, from university
students to Hip-Hop performers and young social activists. we want to create
a space for engaged, motivated young people to be inspired, build networks
and work together to ensure that the politicians, planners and
businesspeople at the World Urban Forum know they must include youth voices
and youth-led projects in any effective solutions to problems like
drug-addiction, hunger, illiteracy and environmental pollution.
The World Youth Forum will culminate in the Hip-Hop Mainstage Concert, a
four-hour interactive show featuring MCs, DJs and performers from Vancouver
and around the globe. Participants in the Youth Forum will also be
registered as delegates at the World Urban Forum, and will be able to meet,
present their projects to and speak directly with the "experts" attending.

Based on extended consultations with our partner organizations, we have been
very busy organizing programming and events for the WYF - We will have
programming updates available on our website as they are confirmed.
Participants will be organized into issue-focused groups (which we have
labeled "Pods") based on the programs and projects they are involved in in
their home countries.
Each Pod is a thematic group facilitated by a host agency in Vancouver
partnered with an international organization from the South
Delegates will self-organize themselves into these based on their
involvement/engagement in their communities and their expertise.
Each Pod will meet each day of the three-day conference, and fulfill these
daily objectives within their area of focus:
Day 1: To create a community of youth led action and learning
Day 2: To share best and promising practices in respective thematic areas
Day 3: To organize and strategize on how to best influence the WUF and
beyond.
Six "Pod-themes" have been identified so far, and others will emerge from
the interest/input of our delegates:
* Making a Living: Youth and the Economy
* Health Care: On the frontline with HIV/AIDS and other disease
* Environment: Creating Healthy and Sustainable Communities
* Safety and Non-Violence: Youth As Peace-Builders
* Youth as Leaders: Locally, Nationally and Internationally
* Gender: Achieving Balance and Equity
* Others (To be determined - eg: The Indigenous Experience)
In addition to the Pods, we have identified a huge amount of interest in
arts-based youth-led development projects. With this in mind, we will be
holding Arts-based activism training workshops.
These will be facilitated workshops where various mediums of the arts will
be employed to convey delegate's messages. All delegates will choose one
medium that they have worked with before, would like to explore more or
share their expertise on.
Every stream/medium would include:
* Invoking the creativity within to express the issue(s).
* How to engage community or communicate effectively with the particular
medium.
* Sharing knowledge & showcasing their work.
There will be local coordinators for every stream and these workshops will
be designed in a way that international delegates can become facilitators/
trainers and also share their expertise as participants. Some examples of
these streams include: Media based activism (documentaries/videos), radio,
music (hip-hop, reggae, folk, etc..), street plays and dance.
Other aspects of the World Youth Program are still in planning, and will be
updated both on our website and in upcoming issues of this newsletter.
