STORIES OF EVERYDAY YOUNG HEROES
Steven (15), Sean (13), Matt (15) and Mark (15) created Surfn Safe, a YSA
Youth Venture Team in Randolph, NJ. The purpose of this Venture is to
educate youth about Internet safety through awareness information in the
form of comic books, events, and tee-shirts. The awareness information in
the materials they give youth provides tips on how to protect themselves.
The comic book feel of the awareness materials Surfn Safe provides appeals
to youth to make them what to read the information. This Venture has
benefited the community by giving parents a feeling that their children are
educated Internet surfers. Surfn Safe decreases the risk of children
becoming vulnerable to strangers online or having their parents financial
information stolen. The goal is that young people will think twice about
providing personal information online and they will think twice about
talking to people they do not know online. Youth also learn to recognize
when they have made a mistake and learn how to bring an unsafe Internet
situation to the attention of an adult who can protect them. In September
2006, Surfn Safe participated in National Kid's Day. They volunteered their
time talking one on one to kids in the community about online safety. They
also gave out pencils, pens, bracelets, brochures, and mouse pads. In
addition, Surfn Safe provided kids with a laptop computer that had NetSmartz
brand videos and games.
Do you know a young hero who should be profiled in the National Service
Briefing?
Nominate a young person between the ages of 5-25, who you think deserves to
be profiled as a young hero. To submit a Young Heroes nomination, please
send the name, age, city and state of the young person you are nominating,
as well as a brief description of their involvement in service to change
their community. Self-nominations are accepted. Send nominations to
nsbinfo (at) ysa.org with the subject line NOMINATION.
