I read the NY Times article below (city/region open to what young people
want and better links between university and region highlighted0 this
morning and thought worthwhile to pass on with few thoughts and solicit
yours. My thinking tends to revolve around intergenerational leadership-
combining the best of experience (old farts like me who want to help) and
the energy and ideas of young people to create a new regional wisdom- a
partnership between visionary regional leaders with access to capital and
decision making + a more autonomous and vibrant young professional sector
making the region attractive as possible based on its unique assets (to
attract a unique segment of the kids just out of college). These two groups
partner on the regional issues that most benefit from a joint effort- like
framing a major trend like sustainability, globalization/localization- but
be careful not to let the old farts mess up the hipness the young crowd is
trying to create. This could be designed into a new regional governance
model.

The 40 Below groups (that Rob and Linda are spearheading in CNY) look like a
strong component for making a city/region more ³hip²

Mission:
* To connect, engage and empower young adults in Central Upstate New York;
* To leverage the collective talents and passions of the under-40
demographic to make this region a more vibrant place to live, learn, work
and play; and
* To make the region a beacon for talent and to give current Central
Upstaters a sense of belonging, worth and community that will entice them to
build their lives here.

Stephanie Naidoff, Philadelphia¹s director of commerce, said a major effort
to draw college students off campus with things like internships and concert
tickets was paying off, increasing the city¹s graduate retention numbers.

³The real issue was, is your city open to a set of ideas from young people,
and their wish to realize their dream or objective in your city,² he said.
³You could go out and build bike paths, but if that¹s not what your young
people want, it¹s not going to work.²
