Sept 18 Notes

Icebreaker:
We learned about eachother's summer highlights and big plans for 2006
through a crazy game of charades. Some people traveled, others worked on
local projects, plans ahead include national fundraising projects and
community windmills in Caroline. Lots of laughs.

Building a group Timeline:
Most of our time together was spent learning about important moments in each
other's lives by creating a group timeline. Based on the evaluations the
activity was a success because it gave participants a chance to think about
their past and talk about what was meaningful for them. It was good to hear
other people's stories, and they felt it was an open atmosphere for them to
share stories. Many people remarked that they haven't done something like
this for themselves before let alone in a group.

The timeline activity ended with a reflection on what issues really get us
fired up or inspired at the moment. People shared:

1) Recognizing the assets of the poor, marginalized people (typically people
of color)

2)Personal action and empowerment

3)Participatory democracy (people working together in their communities)

4) Emotional and spiritual Empowerment

5) Eliminating patriarchy peacefully

6) Solving environmental problems through local participatory governance and
community action

7) Struggles of indigenous peoples

Next meeting we will be building off these topics.

We will use the concept of 'edges' to go deeper into how are feelings about
the issues that we care about sometimes also block us from connecting with
people who care about different issues, or have different perspectives.

Check out the attached document on edges to learn a little background about
those moments in groups when people hit an 'edge'
