Envoyé: Aug 14th, 2006 - 11:44:42

Icebreaker --> Charades of the "Highlight of your Summer"

Check-in --> World Youth Forum and World Urban Forum outcomes,
name one thing personally and professionally that is going on for you right
now
(try to keep important and/or time sensitive announcements about your
organization
to the listserve)

Timeline Activity --> Think about the most important moments of your life,
big or small, that have been an inspiration for you and led you to where you

are today. Examples: it could be your experience growing up in Hollywood, or

a poor, foreign country, a book you read in 3rd grade, being in a school
play,
a favorite teacher you had, watching a friend or family member suffer from a

disease, discovering a really cool nature spot, encountering racism,
being exposed to a different culture, going away to college, learning to
play the
xylophone...

The goal of this activity is to probe yourself on your philosophies,
ideologies, and
outlook on life and how, if at all they were shaped by your earliest
memories
OR
you may choose to do it the opposite way...where you reach into your memory
bank and see what the encounters or instances were that left an imprint on
you,
and how they have helped to identify you today.

Through art, prose, poetry, symbols, colors, etc you will then "map your
life" on our Youth
Connect timeline (1970-2006) !!!

Outreach --> 1) We ask you all to reach out to one High School student and
one College student
and bring them into Youth Connect

Take-Home Activity (DUE NEXT MEETING) --> For next month, we would
like onevolunteer to prepare a 5-10 minute
presentation to our group on a project they're working on. It should be
focused, short and include these things:
-an overview of the project
-what's exciting about it
-its impact on the community
-1-2 ways the program could be improved
-challenges it's currently facing and may face in the future
-pose two questions to the group that you want to explore about your project

Our group will then use a Constructive Feedback Process to give further
ideas and answer the questions the presenter
has posed

Edges Exercise -->
Introduction: What are "edges?"
Explore edges -- where our issues diverge, where they come together
(example: Issue A: environmental issues and Issue B: social justice
issues)

- We will take two of the most polarized issues that were identified by you
guys on
the Timeline Activity, and represent them on a Venn Diagram (overlapping
circles).

- Our large group will split into two groups; one group on the side of Issue
A, and
the other group on the side of Issue B. Each group will then explore the
following questions:
1) What tensions do you feel ? [Situation]
2) What are the things they're doing (action-wise) that tell you
they don't understand
your perspective? [Observations]
3) What are the needs your group is trying to meet with this
issue? [Needs]
4) What is a specific request for you to make with the other
group to help you
meet your needs -- 1 sentence statement of requests [
Requests]

As a large group we will then come together and list (refer to Needs chart)
all the needs
both groups have in common that they want to satisfy.

GOAL: To understand the importance of a safe space in expressing the
diversity of opinions,
experiences, priorities, and agendas we represent. To realize that diversity
can and will lead
to conflict, but that conflict is not a bad thing! It gives us the
opportunity to recognize our
organization's potential for growth, and further helps us to learn.
