Senior Project Officer - Sustainable Consumption

CHOICE is Australia's leading independent consumer organisation. Over
200,000 consumer members subscribe to our publications CHOICE Online
and CHOICE magazine.

CHOICE has been providing consumers with information on social and
environmental issues for many years, in areas such as energy
efficiency, ethical investment and sustainable building. This
position provides an outstanding opportunity for an enthusiastic and
committed professional to further develop our work on sustainable
consumption.

In this role you will support CHOICE's work to help consumers make
sustainable choices. You will prepare major articles and news pieces
on sustainability issues and help to expand the environmental
criteria in our product testing. You will also undertake campaigns
around issues of sustainable consumption, such as assessing the
credibility of green claims about products and services.

You will be a skilled communicator, with qualifications in science,
economics or public policy, and be a motivated and effective advocate
for consumers. Most importantly, you will have a detailed
understanding of the sustainability issues which face consumers
today.

Position description

This position is a key role in CHOICE´s publishing and advocacy work
on sustainable consumption where we aim to be the leading source of
consumer advocacy and information. In particular we aim to:

* Help consumers use their purchasing power to promote
sustainable business practices through our online and print
publications.
* Campaign to ensure that sustainability claims made by
businesses are reliable, credible and comparable.

This position is responsible to ensure that we better communicate our
current work on sustainable consumption and for leading the
development of new work highly relevant to consumers.

The Senior Project Officer will report to the General Manager Policy
and Campaigns, and work closely with the Manager Content Production -
Products.

Responsibilities

Publishing

* Manage and develop magazine and online content on sustainable
consumption topics.
* Identify relevant and significant news stories and prepare them
for publication.
* Research and write major articles on sustainable consumption
aimed at a consumer audience.
* Provide advice to content producers, journalists and editors on
relevant issues, with the aim to include more environmental criteria
in our product tests.

Advocacy

* Contribute to the identification and development of strategic
goals for CHOICE campaign and policy work on sustainable consumption.
* Undertake policy analysis, prepare policy and campaign
material, liaisie with and lobby a wide range of decision makers, and
facilitate consumer involvement in campaigns to achieve change in
consumers´ interests.
* Provide advice and support to the CEO, General Manager Policy
and Campaigns, Media Spokesperson and other staff as required.

General

* Work with other staff to ensure policy and campaign outcomes
are effectively linked to our consumer information objectives and
publications, and vice versa.
* Represent CHOICE in external meetings, conferences,
consultations and similar.
* Provide timely, accurate and useful reporting on CHOICE´s
policy and campaigning outcomes and activities.

Skills and Requirements
Essential

1. In-depth knowledge of sustainability issues relevant to
consumers.
2. Strong research and analytical skills.
3. Excellent communication skills, including:
* the ability to write clear, concise and consumer-focused
articles for publication,
* the ability to write for a range of audiences and media,
and
* the ability to liaise effectively with a diverse range of
people inside and outside CHOICE.
4. The capacity to plan and implement consumer-focussed campaigns.
5. Effective work management skills, including the capacity to
prioritise and focus on key outcomes in a complex policy environment,
and the ability to balance short term and long term tasks and
projects.
6. Effective people skills, including the ability to work
cooperatively with team members, other CHOICE staff, and members of
partner organisations and other groups, and the ability to provide
support and assistance to colleagues.
7. Relevant tertiary qualifications in science, economics or
public policy.
