The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation works to reduce inequities and improve
lives around the world. The foundation's Global Libraries initiative invites
applications from libraries and similar organizations outside the United States
that have created new ways to offer these key services: free public access to
computers and the Internet; public training to assist users in accessing online
information that can help improve their lives; technology training for
library staff; and outreach to underserved communities. The award is for $1
million and the deadline for applications is October 31st.

NEWW Offers Book and Journal Support Network of East-West Women - Book and

The Network of East-West Women (NEWW) is a communications network linking over
1,000 women's advocates in more than 30 countries in the former Soviet
Union, Central and Eastern Europe, Western Europe, and North America. NEWW's
mission is to support the formation of independent women's movements. The
Book and Journal Project provides
support in the following areas and ways: contributes books and journals to
CEE/NIS/Russia from the Western publishing explosion on women and gender;
provides cash grants for individuals and libraries
to build resources and purchase books in local languages; assists in curricula
development and library building for women's resource centers and gender
studies programs; occasionally funds the production of flyers, posters and
newspaper ads to support the advocacy efforts of local NGOs. The Book and
Journal Project also supports organizations and individuals and applications are
offered on an ongoing basis.

The MacArthur Foundation supports creative people and effective institutions

makes grants to selected human rights organizations that work internationally

system. MacArthur
also funds locally based human rights efforts in Russia, Nigeria, and Mexico
through its country offices in Moscow, Abuja, and Mexico City. Each country has
a specific human rights focus which is explained in greater detail on the
Foundation's website. This grant has no specific deadline and letters of
inquiry are accepted throughout the year. The MacArthur Foundation may request a
full proposal based on the proposed project explained in the letter of inquiry.
Women and Families in Africa Supported

New Field Foundation contributes to the creation of a peaceful and equitable
world by supporting women and their families to overcome poverty, violence, and
injustice in their communities. The Foundation's local program supports
dynamic local groups that are organizing collectively to create thriving,

Local grantmaking focuses on three areas: Mano River Union border region of
Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone; Casamance region of Senegal; and Northern
Niger River Basin, particularly initiatives connecting Burkina Faso, Mali, and
Niger. The regional program supports the creation of a more just, equitable, and
peaceful world for rural African women. The Foundation funds programs that
promote systemic changes in policies, laws, cultural norms, and the distribution
of resources, with a focus on West Africa. New Field is open to receiving
