Inequality in Oral Health inAustralia
John Spencer and Jane Harford / Australian
Review of PublicAffairs
Inequality in oral health in Australia has
been extensivelydocumented over the last 25
years. While the existence of inequalities hasbeen
accepted, their fundamental character has been
less well understood. This hasled to a
misinterpretation of the information on inequalities
and afailure to act on their causes. Some new
research on patterns of oraldisease and
treatment means we now have what we need to inform
rational andhumane policy development in the
field of oral health.

A Call for NationalLeadership
National Youth Coalition forHousing -
2 November 2007
The National Youth Coalition for Housing is
calling for nationalleadership to provide an
improved response to homeless young people. So far
inthe Federal Election Campaign there has been
a lot of discussion onaffordable housing.
Maria Leebeek from the National Youth Coalition
forHousing notes that
whilst the housing
affordability crisis ispressuring everyday
Australians, those on the margins, especially
homelessyoung people are finding it impossible
to get housed. In the lastdecade there has
been no substantial increase in funding for
homelessnessservices, which has resulted in
youth housing and homelessness servicesfinding
it increasingly difficult to accommodate young people.
TheSupported Accommodation Assistance Program
is the main response to homelessness and itslast
evaluation noted that there needed to be an
increase of at least 35 -40 % tosupport
services, growth and enable new ways of working.
