Talking Practice: Workshop4
Listening and Responding toAboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander Young People: Learnings
from the Out ofHome Care Forum
Recently the Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander Services Unit inthe Office for
Children, Youth and Family Support (DHCS) and
theInstitute of Child Protection Studies (ACU)
met with Aboriginal and TorresStrait Islander
young people to learn about their experiences, and to
findout how the Out of Home Care system can be
improved. The findings werepresented to
workers at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
Out of HomeCare Forum in September 2007.
Some key findings from the project will be presented
at thisworkshop. We will look at implications
for Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander young
people, services and youth participation. We will
alsodiscuss some learnings on to how to better
work and engage with Aboriginal andTorres
Strait Islander young people. Workers will participate
in aworkshop that looks to further improve our
practice in working with Aboriginaland Torres
Strait Islander young people, families and
communities.

ACT Early Intervention Awards2007
Supportlink, Domestic Violence Crisis Service
&Parentline
The awards are a peer to peer award ceremony.
They are designed tohighlight the significance
of early intervention services in the preventionof
(including but not exclusive to) child and
elder abuse, family violence,substance abuse,
suicide and mental illness, crime, social
isolation,preventable family breakdown and
homelessness. The awards also aim to promotebest
practice and excellence in community service
delivery.
To support this aim, the Department of
Disability, Housing andCommunity Services has
contributed a $5000 award which will be presented
tothe agency / program assessed to be the most
outstanding in eithercategory.
Applications close on COB Friday, 9 November
2007.
The Award Ceremony will be held on Wednesday
12 December 2007.

Acknowledges Community Workers are Underpaid
The Queensland Industrial Relations
Commission's Pay Equity Inquiryreport, Time to
Act was released on 1 October. The report of the
Inquirystates the community sector displays
many characteristics of payundervaluing,
including:
A very high proportion of small workplaces
A predominantly female workforce (87%)
A high proportion of part time (56%) and casual
(20%)employment
A lack of ability for widespread collective
bargaining tooccur
That workers in the community services sector are
more likelyto have a post school
qualification than other workers but have lowerweekly
income
And low wages.

Youth Coalition Policy Spotlight -Working
Families
The ACT Legislative Assembly's Select
Committee on Working Familiesrecently release
their report on the impact of WorkChoices on families
andyoung people in the ACT. The Youth
Coalition gave evidence at the inquiryand the
report has a number of important recommendations
concerningyoung people. The Committee's
recommendations included that the ACTGovernment:
Review its initiatives targeted at unemployed
andunder-employed young people in the ACT;
Fund the production of resources and training for
young peopleon industrial relations; and
Fund for a full-time youth employment lawyer for
the Youth LawCentre (ACT).
As young people are highly vulnerable in the workplace
given theirlimited experience and knowledge of
the industrial relations system, theserecommendations
will make a significant difference to the
empowerment of youngpeople in ACT workplaces.
The Youth Coalition of the ACT will be meetingwith
ACT Government Ministers in the near future to
follow up theserecommendations.

that the ACT has managed to secure vaccines forthe
horses at Pegasus in line with the national
broadening of thepriority list to include

Walk AgainstWarming
Walk Against Warming is Australia's community
day of action toadvocate for the issue of
climate change to be addressed holistically by
alllevels of Australian government and
society. As part of the Walk AgainstWarming,
there will be a youth contingent in every state and
territory. InCanberra this youth contingent
will be meeting at 1pm at the Rotunda atGlebe Park
on Sunday 11 November before marching to join the
main communityrally as it begins. Come along
and bring a school or campus banner,placard,
or something creative, and bring your friends and
people fromgroups you're in. On this Sunday
the 28th of October there will be a working beeor,
in other words, a meeting to paint banners, make
placards,screen-print shirts, create wind
turbines, practice street theatre and get readyfor
all the things that we will be doing at the Walk
Against WarmingYouth Contingent.
The working bee will start at 11am at the
Conservation Council at 3Childers St, Acton
(near the ANU), so bring along your own ideas
andmaterials and see them come to life. As it
will also be a very informal eventit's also a
great chance for you to meet other people in the
campaign(though if you want to paint it may be
a good idea to bring oldclothes).

posters, hand out leaflets, or want more information

Project Australia
Project Australia is a discussion space for
young people to voicetheir concerns and
visions for Australia; be it social,
cultural,environmental, political etc. Their
aim is to actively involve the youth of todayin
creating a brighter future. One of the ways they are
attempting torealise this vision is through a
national night of discussion.
On December 1st young Australians will be
meeting up across thenation to discuss issues
and projects of interest, network and meet newpeople.
Some ways to be involved:
Play a greater role in this innovative project and
host a'Meet-Up' for your area.
Put us in touch with people you know who are
passionate aboutparticular issues or
projects and who might be willing to spread the word
orbecome engaged.

2007-08 ACT Women's Grants ProgramNow Open

Community Services
The ACT Womens Grants Program is an ACT
Governmentinitiative that provides funding
assistance to develop activities that improve
thestatus of women in the ACT. A total of
$100,000 in funding is available.
Applications are invited to apply for funding under
the followingtwo categories:
Special Projects: up to $15,000 per project is
available tosupport activities that progress
one or more objectives of The ACTWomens
Plan by contributing to public policy, service
development forthe benefit of women or by
adding to the research base. Copies of The ACTWomens
Plan are available from the ACT Office for
Women (seebelow).
Capacity Building: up to $3,000 per project is
available tosupport activities that
strengthen the capacity of communityorganisations and
