TALK ON COP-11 UN CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE

Presented by Morag Carter (David Suzuki Foundation)
Morag Carter will give a presentation on the UN Climate Change negotiations in
Montreal, and the exciting new goals that some municipalities, states and
nations are pursuing to seriously reduce greenhouse gas emmissions in the next
50 years. Morag is the director of the Climate Change Program for the David
Suzuki Foundation.
The Oil We Eat: Local Food, The University and Climate Change
Did you know that 90% of the food on Victoria grocery store shelves is
imported from off-island? How does this constant flow of food transportation
impact climate change right in our own backyard? The UVic Sustainability
Project invites you to join us for a tasty local food dinner with speakers
from the university and non-profit communities exploring the relationship
between the food we eat and the landscape in which we learn.

About David Suzuki
David Suzuki, Chair of the David Suzuki Foundation (http://www.davidsuzuki.org),
is an award-winning scientist, environmentalist and broadcaster. He is renowned
for his radio and television programs that explain the complexities of the
natural sciences in a compelling, easily understood way.
He is well known to millions as the host of the Canadian Broadcasting
Corporation's popular science television series, The Nature of Things, and the
creator of several other radio and television documentary programs.
An internationally respected geneticist, David was a full Professor at the
University of British Columbia in Vancouver from 1969 until his retirement in
2001. David has received numerous awards for his work, including a UNESCO prize
for science, a United Nations Environment Program medal and the Order of Canada.
David was born in Vancouver, BC in 1936. During World War II, at the age of six,
he was interned with his family in a camp in BC. After the war, he went to high
school in London, Ontario. He graduated with Honours from Amherst College in
1958 and went on to earn his PhD in Zoology from the University of Chicago in
1961.
The author of more than 42 books, David Suzuki is recognized as a world leader
in sustainable ecology. He lives with his wife, Dr. Tara Cullis, and two
children in Vancouver.

break. Gathering our Voices 2006 will focus on Aboriginal Health and Justice

World Urban Forum 2006 (WUF 3)

If you're between the ages of 15-19, living in or near Victoria, and want to
have your
thoughts and expressions on climate change and the environment published...then
read on!
SUBMIT and be entered to win great PRIZES!
Categories:
* article/non-fiction (under 500 words)
* poetry/fiction (under 250 words),
* inspirational examples/case studies
* art/comics/photography
* reviews (under 250 words).
DEADLINE: submissions are due by Feb. 17 and will not be accepted after that
date.
IMPORTANT: submissions must include student's name, grade and school and contact
info (so you can receive a copy and receive a prize if you're entry is
selected).
FORMAT: written matter must be submitted as a Microsoft Word document sent via
email (growingschools (at) lifecyclesproject.ca) or dropped off on a disc.
LifeCycles will be editing the submissions and putting it together in zine
format- we need high school youth to provide the content, and LifeCycles will
assemble it after making the selections and edits! Art, photography, etc
should be mailed or dropped off by Feb. 17- don't forget to leave your contact
info so you can get it back.
SUBJECT MATTER: anything to do with climate change so long as clear links
between what you are talking about climate change are made!
Climate change is an enormous topic and one that is extremely important. It can
be
tackled from many perspectives. Here are just a few examples (but feel free to
come up
with your own!):
* Sustainable lifestyles/consumption
* Fossil fuels
* Renewable energy
* Deforestation
* Transportation
* Youth
* Endangered species
* Cultures and communities at risk
* food security
* Kyoto Protocol
* Eco-justice
* Arctic and other case studies
* One-Tonne Challenge
* Ecological footprints
Note: When using supporting facts please include a reference (of a website,
author, etc)
to back them up.
BE HEARD - BE PUBLISHED! This is a space created for youth to express
themselves to the Canadian public. Zines are mini-magazines that typically use
a creative and inventive, do-it-yourself style of cut and paste, typewritten
words, and collage. LifeCycles will be making 200 copies of the zine to give
away to youth in Victoria for free. We will also make an e-zine version and
upload it to youth and environmental websites across Canada. The zine will be
availabe to download and print or to photocopy off original hardcopies.

QUEEN ALEXANDRA FOUNDATION YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL GRANTS
The Queen Alexandra Foundation Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is once again
issuing a call for applications for their annual Youth Grants Program.
Twice a year the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) encourages groups to apply for
funding to run programs "for youth, by youth." The deadine for spring
applications is FEBRUARY 27, 2006.

Volunteer Scholarships: The TOYOTA EARTHDAY SCHOLARSHIPS program rewards
graduating high school students and Québec junior college students who have
achieved academic excellence and have distinguished themselves in
environmental community service. Fifteen scholarships of $5000 each will be

International Young Eco Hero Awards
Do you know any YOUNG ECO-HEROES aged 8 to 16 years? Please let them know
about Action For Natures 2006 International Young Eco-Hero awards program.
Winners receive a cash prize and recognition for their environmental
accomplishments. The award promotes individual action concerning
environmental protection and advocacy, environmental health projects and the

Position: YOUTH INVOLVEMENT COORDINATOR
Program: Youth Health Program, Childrens & Womens Health Centre of British
Columbia
Terms: A one-year contract term with possibility of renewal, $16 per hour x 16
hours per week.

The Youth Health Program has a mission to improve the health of young people
through clinical services, education, training, health promotion, advocacy, and
research. Through the Youth Involvement Project, youth (12 to 25 years of age)
with health conditions are empowered to become involved in their health.
JOB SUMMARY
Coordination of Youth Involvement activities across C&W through:
General
Working collaboratively with the Youth Health Program team and
with Youth Health Program volunteers in order to include youth as consumers of
health care in planning, evaluations, and programs.
Maintaining a vision for and overseeing the development of the
Youth Involvement activities in the Youth Health Program.
Youth Activities
Coordinating youth activities based on a continuum of peer
support and advocacy support
activities for youths.
Education and Training
Participating in training sessions for health care
professionals, families and youth on peer support and advocacy support in
health care interactions with youths.
Contributing youth perspective to educational presentations.
· Training hospital volunteers as they enter the Youth Health Volunteer Program.
Advocacy
Participating in a number of avenues to work with
administration, health care providers, families, and youths to develop
youth-appropriate systems across the site.
Policy Development
Participating in the development/revision of policies to meet
the developmentally appropriate
needs of youth.
Developing Youth Health Program policies relevant to the Youth
Involvement activities.
Evaluation
Ongoing and annual monitoring and evaluation of youth
activities, education and training.
Communication
Maintaining communication with C&W youth regarding youth
activities.
Maintaining communication with program and C&W staff regarding
youth activities, education and policy development.
Maintaining communication with youth community regarding Youth
Involvement at the Youth Health Program
· Maintaining communication with Youth Health volunteers regarding Youth Health
activities.
QUALIFICATIONS
Undergraduate degree or combination of education and equivalent
experience.
Computer skills: working knowledge of Word, Outlook and Excel.
Training in facilitation skills, advocacy skills, and
communication skills.
Experience facilitating youth groups.
Demonstrated experience working with youths.
Strong commitment to youth participation and engagement.
Familiar with rights of youths in their health care.
Clear and focused approach in advocacy and education.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong oral and
written communication skills.
Flexible, adaptable.
Able to prioritize and work effectively under tight timelines,
with attention to detail.
Clear understanding of working independently as well as with a
team.
Creative, energetic and enjoys working with other young people.
