VOLUNTEERING
(1) For those of you in and around UVic:
Naturescape BC Volunteer Opportunities
Naturescape BC is a program to restore, preserve, and enhance wildlife
habitat in urban and rural landscape. It is a program for people who
want to connect more closely with nature in their daily lives, to
quote their website. A little known fact is that the RNS Program at
the University of Victoria is currently the home of Naturescape BC and
it is an important part of our activities. Backyards are at one end of
the spectrum of habitats that benefit from restoration, with pristine
landscapes such as old growth forests and wetlands at the other end.
The RNS Program is putting together a team of naturescapers who would
conduct community workshops and put together newsletters. The
workshops would be geared to the general public, would be offered
free, and would include topics such as gardening with native
vegetation, theme gardens (e.g. ethnobotany, aromatherapy, bird
gardens) and animal houses (e.g. bird boxes, bat boxes, bee blocks).
Working on the newsletter involves writing articles, taking
photographs, editing, layout everything needed to produce a print
ready, 6-page copy.
This would be great experience to include on a resume. It would also
help to create much needed wildlife habitat in the city. If you are
interested, please contact me at schaefer (at) uvic.ca or call me at
472-4387. I would very much like to have a meeting of the group
sometime in mid-December so we can get started right away. Val
