GATHERING OUR VOICES 2006
Aboriginal Youth Conference in the Traditional Territory of the Secwepemc People
in Kamloops, BC.
March 12-15, 2006
We invite Aboriginal youth (13-24) to gather in Kamloops at Thompson Rivers
University and take part in a dynamic and educational conference over spring
break. Gathering our Voices 2006 will focus on Aboriginal Health and Justice
Issues. The gathering will feature interactive and informative workshops,
career and education fair, cultural teachings, group activities, and Youth
Talent

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
Coast Capital Savings Foundation invites proposals from that focus on youth
leadership. Coast Capital Savings is dedicated to promoting its vision of
growing strong, confident, healthy young Canadians. The Foundation will focus
its support on initiatives, programs and partnerships that build or enhance
leadership skills for youth. The Foundation welcomes grant applications from
registered non-profit organizations who meet the Foundations funding criteria.

Columbia Basin Youth Grants Program Looking For Projects To
Fund! Columbia Basin Youth Grants is a new funding program for youth
projects. There is a small grants stream (for projects up to $2500) and a
large grants stream (for projects over $2500) and theres no deadline to

Volunteer Scholarships: The Toyota Earthday Scholarship program rewards
graduating high school students and Québec junior college students who have
achieved academic excellence and have distinguished themselves in
environmental community service. Fifteen scholarships of $5000 each will be
awarded across Canada this year. Applications due: 31 January 2006. For more

OTHER
The Canadian Rural Partnership is seeking nominations of young rural
Canadians (18 - 29 years old) who have demonstrated outstanding achievements and
contributions to rural, remote and/or northern Canada, in 2004 or 2005, for the
third Young Leaders in Rural Canada Awards (YLRCA). A commemorative Award will
be presented in each of the following categories: INNOVATION, LEADERSHIP and
PARTNERSHIP. Deadline: To be considered, submissions must be

We are looking for a person who is in tune with whats going on in Ontario
in terms of climate change projects! We need someone who knows of the groups and
the youth that are making change happen. Were looking for a person who can
network, coordinate, organize, problem solve and stay on top of things, not to
mention sharing the news with others!
Strengthening the Kyoto Generation and YEN
The YEN is a national non-profit capacity building organization for any and
all of Canada's youth environmental groups. We're youth created, youth
driven and for youth! The Youth Environmental Network (YEN) and the Sierra
Youth Coalition (SYC) have introduced an innovative project that is
engaging, inspiring and supporting community youth driven initiatives to
combat Climate Change. This project aims to build youth leadership
throughout Ontario Communities on one of the most pressing environmental
issues facing us today. This project is run in conjunction with the
One-Tonne Challenge for Youth Project, which includes the distribution of
OTC micro-grants to youth organizations to do their best work on climate
change awareness in their communities.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Networking:
* Creating and maintaining communications with YENGOs in Ontario
working on Climate related projects, OTC partner organizations and programs
(eg: Climate Change Hubs, Clean Air Champions, Students on Ice, Sierra Youth
Coalition, Communities Challenge, etc.);
* Collaborating with other YEN Regional Coordinators;
* Working with regional YENGOs on delivering Energy Reduction
Strategies in a youth-friendly format;
* Travelling to, and participating in, certain regional OTC-related
events;
* Reporting to the YEN National Director.
Organizing:
* Helping to organize regional OTC-related events;
* Helping YEN OTC micro-grant recipients with their projects;
* Tracking and keeping records of activities of different regional OTC
groups and reporting on them;
* Training and Skills building: providing young people in Ontario with
the skills and resources needed to carry out meaningful and successful
projects. The training you will provide to YENGOs includes auditing,
fundraising, climate change information, developing and implementing energy
action plans, the Government of Canadas One-Tonne Challenge (OTC),
budgeting, facilitation, project management, working with diverse
communities and multi-stakeholder processes.
Coordinating:
* Helping to link the projects of OTC partners, YEN OTC micro-grant
recipients and YEN;
* Helping to avoid duplication between different OTC projects and
programs;
* Acting as a hub for updates on YEN OTC projects and other OTC
projects regionally.

Ecotrust Canada is registered charitable organization whose purpose is to build
the conservation economy along BCs coastal temperate rainforests. A
conservation economy provides meaningful work and good livelihoods, supports
vibrant communities and the recognition of Aboriginal rights and title, and
conserves and restores the environment. We build the capacity of communities,
institutions and businesses to participate in the conservation economy; raise
and broker capital to accelerate the transition to a conservation economy; and
connect conservation entrepreneurs to the marketplace.
The Development Associate reports to the Vice president and is a member of the
development team. In collaboration with the President and development team,
this position's primary responsibility is to implement comprehensive strategies
to identify, cultivate and solicit prospects for major gifts. This position
requires effective interactions with diverse groups including First Nations,
volunteers, colleagues, and community and business leaders. Initial one year
contract may be extended.
Responsibilities:
- Provides overall coordination and implementation of the major gifts program,
including: supports the recruitment of development committee volunteers and
manages their activities; researches prospective donors and matches them to
internal operating priorities; writes original funding proposals and customizes
templates for the solicitation of gifts; solicits gifts and other funding
utilizing proposals, development committee and board volunteers; follows-up
solicitations in a timely manner; creates appropriate donor recognition and
recognition events; reports on fundraising activities on a regular basis to the
Vice President. Develops and maintains active working relationships with
evelopment committee and board volunteers, and where needed, with donors and
prospective donors. May undertake active cultivation of prospects.
- Provides cultivation and solicitation training, guidance and support to
development committee and board volunteers for major gift fundraising
activities.
- In collaboration with the Development Grants Manager, maintains The Raiser^s
Edge database as well as tracking the cultivation, solicitation, stewardship
and recognition of donors.
- Prepares fundraising communication materials (letters, proposals, reports,
brochures, articles, press releases, etc.) for internal and external audiences.
- This position will also provide regular support to the foundation fundraising
activities of the organization, including writing grant proposals and/or
reports.
Qualifications:
- University degree or equivalent work experience and 3 years experience in
fundraising and volunteer management. Specific experience in major gifts
fundraising strongly preferred.
- Results oriented team player with an optimistic attitude. Clear ability to
take initiative as an independent worker. Strong collaboration skills and
ability to work in teams.
- Ability to apply strategic and creative thinking, while being persistent,
motivated and energetic on tasks large and small.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work accurately under deadlines.
- Excellent verbal and oral communications.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and fundraising software, preferably The
Raiser's Edge.
- CFRE certification is an asset.
- A working knowledge of Vancouver^s philanthropic community is an asset.
- Knowledge of environmental and social issues of BC^s coast is an asset.
Salary commensurate with experience.

VOLUNTEERING
(1) For those of you in and around UVic:
Naturescape BC Volunteer Opportunities
Naturescape BC is a program to restore, preserve, and enhance wildlife
habitat in urban and rural landscape. It is a program for people who
want to connect more closely with nature in their daily lives, to
quote their website. A little known fact is that the RNS Program at
the University of Victoria is currently the home of Naturescape BC and
it is an important part of our activities. Backyards are at one end of
the spectrum of habitats that benefit from restoration, with pristine
landscapes such as old growth forests and wetlands at the other end.
The RNS Program is putting together a team of naturescapers who would
conduct community workshops and put together newsletters. The
workshops would be geared to the general public, would be offered
free, and would include topics such as gardening with native
vegetation, theme gardens (e.g. ethnobotany, aromatherapy, bird
gardens) and animal houses (e.g. bird boxes, bat boxes, bee blocks).
Working on the newsletter involves writing articles, taking
photographs, editing, layout everything needed to produce a print
ready, 6-page copy.
This would be great experience to include on a resume. It would also
help to create much needed wildlife habitat in the city. If you are
