Yussif Abdul-mumin is my name and a member of TIG/Northern Ghana
schools coordinator, founder of Action for Community Development, and we
are basically working on human rights, education, health, peace
building and environmental protection and conservation.
My comment on this E'consultations that we are all in mostly when what
we are raising can be included in the the coming world Urban Youth
forum scheduled for China.
I must say urbanization and more so like Ghana are engulf with many
challenges, and this forum would help us all in developing our ideas on
environmental deterioration and climate change particularly in the
Northern sector.
I supports my friends ideas and to add a little to that,
The world has taken a turn degrading almost in all sectors of activity:
production, education, food, etc..
It is important to pool our efforts and to act in awareness unit for a common
goal.
The science and help move the effective realization of human work and also
kills by polarization, toxic waste and other measures to respond to all this,
we must take action, so I prescribe the Cooperative to address this problem.
Who can answer these questions or challenge:
1 - Can we solve our problem without be motivated?
2 - It is there an alternative to cooperative?
3a) what sectors of the economy(both formal and informal) are young women and
men engaged in?What kinds of work are they doing?
It is well known that young people represent 25% of the global workforce in
labour market yet 43.7% of the world's unemployed. In this regard
majority of youth work in horticultural sectors, transport sector, other work
as housegirls and others work as secretaries who are paid peanuts.
3b) Consequences of urban economic inequality for youth.
Poor infrastructures, inadequate land, exploitation by middlemen, collapsed
cooperatives societies, inadequate credit facilities and high costs of inputs
are the cause of economic inequality and this has resulted to youth engaging in
vices such as consumption of illicit brews, rise in Hiv and Aids pandemic,
insecurity. These causes has actyed as barriers for the youth to explore their
knowledge and skills. This has also brought the issue of choosy whereby youth
now start to choose what kind of activity to undertake. This has also created
gaps between youths. Those from poor background become useless whereas those
from rich prosper and hopelessness and rejection attitude develops.
3c)Strategies to be recommended
To establish and equip resource centres in every town and to be run and managed
by youth. It will act as a drop in centre where the youth can exchange ideas as
they acquire more knowledge
To exempt the fees such as trading licence fee for the youth who are start up
To revive the cooperative societies as we create more and need to equip them
with the modern equipment.
To regulate the prices of farm inputs and offering favourable credit facilities
without putting conditions on collateral due to fact that youth have no
land/security.
Lastly to use bottom-up development approach whereby the youth identify their
needs and strategies on achieving such needs.
3d) Role of youth in strategic planning
They should be the ones to mobilise and participate in identifying the needs
and strategising the action plan.
They should be informed in advance on any project proposal which is earmarked
for implementation in their respective areas.
4a) Major urban environmental issues in my town
The issue of air pollution, discharge of sewerage and industrial
effluents, woodlots among many are the major challenges that need to be
addressed. They affect the lives of everyone and mostly the invisible poors.
b) The youth are involved in urban environmental issues in both positive and
negative affairs and mostly in doing. They are not involved in planning. So the
youth do it without know how on how to go about it.Its surprising to find a
youth engaged in an affair yet he/she does not know whether it is right or
wrong.Need to equip them with basic knowledge. For instance in the year 2003
when the Narc government in kenya introduced the issue of safety belt in
transport sector so many people thought that the minister was going against yet
the policy exist.I noted that although sthe policies are already gazetted the
majority are not aware.
4c) Three major urban environmental issues to emphasized.
To encourage planting of more trees as we discourage cutting of tree any how.
To introduce fireless cooker manufacturing as an alternative way to mitigate
against this dangerous habit of felling trees.
Recycling of polythene papers instead setting dumping sites.
Good water reservoirs to be put in place
4d) The youth play an important role is and need more knowledge on
environmental
issues. They need to know the importance that are associated
with environmental issues.
