Sujet: INTRODUCTION AND WEEK ONE QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Envoyé: Jun 23rd, 2008 - 05:40:31

My name is Wafullah Teresah Nekesah, female aged 27 from Kenya and I am a member of HEEP Group Kitengela my position being a Volunteer Agricultural Advisor.

My email address is tnwafullah (at) heepgroup.org

My views on WEEK ONE questions are as follows:
Question 1
 As a young woman I like quiet and green places, those that are not polluted by smoke, dust and noise. Somewhere away from the hustle and bustle of town life. Somewhere I can relax in peace and have a breather of fresh air! It gives me inner peace when am in such spaces and hence I can perform better as a person. I like a peaceful space and environment generally which is almost like impossible to get nowadays!
 I dislike noisy places, especially if the noises are disorganized, they give me headaches and also where I get bumped into by almost everyone while am walking that I feel like crying when I am in such a space. I would rather a small room out f such a place that a mansion in such a space! It seems that is what we have everywhere these days resulting in constant headaches and stress each day that passes by.
 I would like to see a city with nicely structured roads that can accommodate pedestrians, motorists, cyclists and the public at large harmoniously. I would also like to see good roads that will enable me get to wherever I am going and be able to reach there in good time and not have back aches due to pot holes! I would like to see a town without slums; they not only reflect on the poverty levels of the people but also show how government s are not committed in any way in slum upgrading projects for the people. I would like to see everyone access clean, decent food and tap water without having to like sweat for it, by these I mean pay extra either in cash or by looking for it! I would love to see more GREEN- trees, grass, flowers…along my ways as I walk. I would like to see courtesy as we walk on the roads so that I don’t just get bumped into every now and then! I would want to see respect from both the government and the people, some equality in terms of road usage, so that I am not stopped and stuck in traffic just because the who is who is using that road!
 I believe the only way young people can be involved in making these changes is by creating awareness on the need of having such things put in place, advocacy not only to the people but the government, perhaps they have forgotten that we exists hence we need to remind them.

Question 2
Social equity is really nothing more than doing justice to our fellow employees, students, or acquaintances who have, as a result of membership in a protected class, suffered injuries now or in the past. These injuries may take many forms but generally consist of some form of harassment or discrimination which has caused the victim to suffer a loss of the equal rights and opportunities that we all cherish.
 I will take the case if employment, to me I feel young people are discriminated against when it comes to issues about employment! They are left out on the basis of lack of experience yet, where do the employers want them to get experience from when they can’t employ them. They are also the group that is widely used for volunteer work and in most cases they have been abused hence causing them to be dependent on their parents some who don’t are left to wallow in the miasma of poverty! It would be very unfair to judge the youth as the inexperienced and hence exploit the same youth as volunteer for the same tasks that would be given to them as jobs! This has not only caused the increase in slum residence as most of them end up staying in slums, but also irresponsible sexual behaviors directly linked to increase in HIV/ AIDS and related STIs. Therefore it is high time governments came up with clear policies that would enable the young people be absorbed directly not only in the formal but informal sector so as to be empowered financially.
 At times in my field of profession which is Horticulture, it is very hard to get jobs that you would be looked at as fragile as mostly it is men who have been known to do such work. Therefore I am looked at as not only too young and inexperienced but also as a woman who may fail in that field. Hence a feeling of discrimination for me as a young professional woman.
 Be able to plan for the ever increasing population, not only decent, proper and affordable housing but also being able to predict the number of those seeking employment and being able to absorb them both in formal and informal sectors to enable them have a decent life. The government should be able to plant for these as they have the stastics in place, they have analysts who can come up with workable plans to ensure that these systems are put in place and have the machineries to ensure that they work and are followed and monitored even in future. The government is responsible. I would also say that the young people are also responsible in a way, by just dwelling on white collar jobs and not being able to look at alternatives like farming, mechanics and others blue-collar jobs! We are partly to blame for the increase in urban populations therefore the need to inform the youth that urban areas are not the only places they can seek employment.
 The role of young people is to ensure that, we do not dwell on the past but simply focus on the future and ensuring that given the chance, one puts systems in place that will enable proper running even in future when they are not there. We need to set examples in terms of reduction of racism and tribalism…and all the other …isms which may also include nepotism, regionalism, ethnicism only to mention but a few which have brought us into this sorry state!
