Cheers,

Hi youth,
The GCCA 'Adopt-a-negotiator' campaign/project is seeking a volunteer
from Brazil.
The project description is below, but basically, this volunteer will
act as a 'Negotiator Tracker' for their target nation at the Bangkok,
Barcelona UN intersessionals, and Copenhagen for COP15. The volunteer
should be well-connected in to local activist networks and climate
coalitions (eg regional CAN) in their country, and can blog in their
national language, to communicate the complexity of the negotiations
in everyday language, to the general public. They also blog on
political developments in between the UN meetings. See
http://adoptanegotiator.org for more info. It started at Bonn2 with 8
countries, and now they're adding Brazil.
In return for the efforts of volunteers, the GCCA can cover your costs
for travel and accommodation, as well as a modest per-diem, for the
meetings that you'll cover. As such, this is an important opportunity
for youth who would otherwise be unable to attend, as it can enable
your participation
Contact myself and Stuart McWilliam from Oxfam UK
if you're interested. A little info on
yourself and your networks would be good to include as well.
Ta,
Anna K
Overview
Adopt-A-Negotiator is a project to turn up the pressure on key Country
Lead Negotiators taking part in the negotiations for a global climate
change deal to be signed in Copenhagen in December 2009. Heads of
State / relevant Country Ministers will also be targeted where
necessary. The project objectives are:
* To put Country Lead Negotiators under continual public
scrutiny between Bonn 2 and the COP.
* To ensure that Country Lead Negotiators are constantly aware
that their performance is being tracked by a wide activist / public
base.
* To ask the Country Lead Negotiators to feed any criticisms of
their negotiating teams performance to their respective country
Minister info will also be sent directly to the concerned
Minister/Head of State.
* To have a real impact on the progress of the negotiations
(towards a Safe and Fair deal) by increasing pressure on key players
whose work is traditionally independent from any campaign activist
scrutiny and public pressure.
Country Negotiator Trackers
A dedicated Negotiator Tracker from each target country will have a
specific responsibility for meeting and tracking the performance of
their Country Lead Negotiator. He or she will feed performance
information in regular updates, via the countrys climate change
coalition, to campaigners and activists who have committed to Adopt
their Negotiator for the next six months.
The responsibilities of the Country Negotiator Trackers will be:
* To introduce themselves ahead of Bonn 2 in a letter.
* To meet with their Country Lead Negotiator ahead of Bonn 2 and
during Intersessionals
* To follow and track the performance of their Country Lead
Negotiator and his / her team, regularly communicating directly with
them, between now and the COP.
* To update the activists in the home country NGO climate platform
/ network / coalition to report on the performance of their Country
Lead Negotiator, weekly and every day during intersessionals.
* To encourage activists, where appropriate, to mobilise if the
Country Lead Negotiator and his/her team are blocking or being
unconstructive in the negotiations: mostly by e-mail targeting the
relevant Minister or Heads of State, but could include other visible
protests for specific situations. This will provide a feedback loop
between negotiator actions and country capitals.
At UN Intersessionals, the team of Country Negotiator Trackers will be
made visible (branded T-shirts). They will have also have a role in
blogging and may take part in media stories.
Support to Country Negotiator Trackers
Trackers will be supported by a GCCA project manager, who will act as
a bridge to the GCCA Nerve (policy) centre to ensure that they receive
and understand up-to-date and accurate information about their
countrys negotiating teams performance. The GCCA project manager
will prompt and facilitate their communications to their home NGO
network.
Country Negotiator Trackers will meet in Bonn, directly prior to the
June UN Intersessional (1st-12th June) where they will receive
training and capacity building, as required. Their travel and
accommodation costs will be paid for by GCCA.
Key Target Countries
Initially, the project will focus on eight target countries: US,
Canada, Japan, UK, Germany, France, Italy and India. For each
country, a Coalition Lead and Country Negotiator Tracker will be
appointed.
Depending on expressions of interest and commitment received, the list
of countries is likely to be expanded subject to GCCAs capacity and
availability of funding. At a later date, a dedicated website
encouraging wider publics to Adopt a-Negotiator may be developed.
